Apalachee High School Principal David McGee will retire from the Barrow County School District at the end of the month, he announced this week, and school leaders are working on a timeline to fill his position by mid-September.

According to Barrow County School Superintendent Wanda Creel, McGee, who has been an employee of the school system for 25 years, disclosed his plans to her Monday afternoon.

She described his notice as “a very difficult decision he has reached" to be able to focus on his health and his family, Creel wrote in an Wednesday email. “I, like you, wish it had been a different decision, but I respect, honor and support his needs at this time.”

McGee's retirement comes at the cusp of a new form of governance for the Barrow school system. In April, it achieved charter system status by the Georgia Board of Education, which provides greater influence on individual school levels. That plan began its implementation this school year.

Creel provided a timeline which outlines the steps the system must take in order to replace McGee under the charter of its new system. While a job vacancy for principal was posted Wednesday, Aug. 17, the AHS Governance Team is slated to meet Thursday, Aug. 18, to discuss the position and to ask for input regarding the qualities desired in a principal.

Creel's timeline lists Aug. 31 as the close to the job vacancy. Sept. 1-2 are reserved to review resumes and a team will conduct interviews on the week of Sept. 6. A recommendation to the BOE should be provided on Sept. 13. An interim principal has not yet been identified.

Creel further described McGee, who just began his fifth year as AHS principal this year, as a principal who has always been “focused on the students.”

According to Creel, in his resignation letter, McGee wrote: “I have always said that as long as I loved being around the students, that I would keep going, but the reality is that there will never be a time when I will not love the students and I have to step away at some point. Therefore, I plan to retire effective August 31, 2011.”

Said Creel: “McGee led Apalachee High School to becoming a 'CHEE Nation' that feels important and valued in the community. We appreciate the tremendous service that Mr. McGee has provided the students, faculties, staff and the community of Barrow County for many years in various capacities. He has truly built the foundation and had an impact on countless individuals. He will always have a spot on our team.”

First, he was never a football coach. Second, his resume includes honors work in education administration. He did coach girl's basketball before getting his higher degree in administration, Try learning some facts before youy display your ignorance

Actually, He did coach some football at WBHS when he first came to Barrow County. Ninth Grade mostly and helped out with Varsity too.

I vote that Dr. Eli Welch from WMS becomes the new principal. He was one of the runner-ups for superintendent for the county and is an amazing administrator. If BCSS is smart, they'll put him up there!

I second that vote, awesome principal who takes his job serious to every degree. Maybe he could help enforce the dress code policy which isn't currently. Why stress importance of dress code in middle school for the students just to get to high school and wear WHAT EVER they want to. These children are our future and they need to be taught how to dress appropriately.

The better question is , what are the parents not enforcing the dress code before they come to school. The parents must buy the clothes they wear, the kids live under their roof and I believe the children, in most cases, are a reflection of what is lacking at home, which is discipline and morals.

YES, dress code is a problem in our schools but believe me there are ALOT more problems this was just ONE of MANY issues I could go on and on about bullying, administrators turning their head and just brushing things under the rug,test scores, lack of parent participation, dress was just ONE area! One huge step toward the right direction was Dr. Saunder's retiring!

Any yes, parents do buy clothes and should be responsible for what the kids leave the house in however, alot of these HS students work and buy their own clothes and might change before they get to school and the parents are unaware of it... its kind of like a kid saying they are going to Jack's house and end up at an unsupervised drinking party. Morals should be taught at HOME and reenforced at school!

McGee was a very good principal. A man of integrity who was 100% for the students. These days you don't get many like that. Most are about themselves and politics. McGee was not. Great man, great family. He will be missed!

All because she enjoyed a glass of wine while on vacation in Europe. Its no secret McGee is retiring because of the lack of professionalism he demonstrated related to the Payne case. What he did to coerce that young lady into resigning borders on criminal. Barrow residents should be most concerned about how this reflects on their community. This is an exerpt from the AJC blog on the case: "Meddling in a teacher’s private life, threatening and intimidating a teacher to resign based upon her non-job related behavior (which behavior is perfectly lawful and non-offensive), raising fraudulent claims regarding a student’s “involvement”, and wasting significant school system resources litigating over such an idiotic issue. This type of conduct can cause a school to lose its accreditation." Whoever conspired with McGee to create the fake email and pressure Ms Payne to resign should resign as well. Total lack of ethics, leadership, and competence. Do the citizens of Barrow think an indusrty would want to move to Barrow...and bring jobs...to a community that operates like this? Get with the times people!

Wanda-do you think you should be held accountable for the McGee mess, under your watch? How about the coach busted in the prostitution sting in Gwinnett that still works for Barrow......at Appalachee no less. Time to clean things up and get rid of the rednect network and the bible thumpers trying to rule everybody's lives in Barrow. The double standards will keep Barrow in the dark ages.

How can a logical thinking person defend this ignorant teacher. She resigned, she wasn't forced she chose to resign. It is her stupidity if she did not make the right decision. If you incriminate yourself in court, should they say oh you didn't know your fifth amendment right and strike your testimony? If she was to stupid to stand up for herself at the right time why would anyone feel compelled to do it now. She needs to take accountability for not fighting for her job when the right time to do so was, not when she got some ambulance chaser to help her look for one last payday. If they would have straight up fired her I would be in her side 100% but she got duped and fell for there antics and now wants sympathy for her stupidity, I don't think so. That is the problem with this country, no one feelsvthey should be accountable for there actions.

The teacher was clearly ignorant as you say, but mcgoo evidently sensed that she was an idiot and lied, and coersed and threatened his way to get her to resign.
You will find that most people are ignorant of the law unless there is some kind of moral involved.thats what lawyers are for.
Im glad that she is not a teacher here anymore because evidently she didnt know very much , but that does not erase the guilt of mcgoo and the as yet unnamed fat woman who complained about her.
Unless the govt is forced to obey the law then everyon who is not a lawyer is subject to this kind a intimedation.

Jack -- wasn't it mentioned in the original case that the female Asst. Principal was also influential in talking Ms. Payne into resigning? I liked Mr. McGee, I just never thought he was a good candidate for a Principal's position. I have concerns regarding the honesty of the Asst. Principal in this case though.

It doesn't make Payne a bad teacher or an idiot just because she didn't know the details of how the process of dismissing a teacher works. She trusted her Principal and Asst. Principal to tell her the truth--and they have admitted to telling her that she WOULD be suspended and that resignation was her ONLY other option--a LIE. They also lied and told her that a parent had complained about her when, in reality, it was only an anonymous email complaint. McGee blindsided her and coerced her resignation so that he could (like a good politician) avoid the wrath of an angry "parent" and the negative publicity that might come with it (ironic now, indeed). McGee is the IDIOT to act so quickly on an anonymous email. He's an IDIOT if he thinks that teachers can't, don't, or shouldn't have an active social life. And he's an IDIOT for not just settling this case and letting this woman get on with her life and career.

McGee also has admitted that Ms. Payne had never had any other complaints made against her and that she had received satisfactory yearly reviews. It's clear that small town politics is the reason he tried to quietly push her, a young teacher that he knew didn't know the ins and outs of the system, out the door.

While the timing off Mr. McGee s resignation is certainly suspect to the Payne case, I have seen 2 of my 3 children graduate under him. My 3 rd is a senior this year. And regardless of his miscues he has done a fine job. The student body loves him. They stand every time he speaks at an event and cheer for him wildly. He has certainly left a lasting impression on many, many students. I'll choose the high road and stick with the thought he has health or private issues prompting his retirement. Having said that , someone(Beth) please let the cat out of the bag and tell us why Darby should resign?

I'm sure the students at AHS DID love him, but I can guarantee you not all of the teachers at AHS like him. He DOES usually take the side of the student/parent, which isn't always the right thing to do. Teachers need the support of their admins to be successful. He has no idea what goes on in the classrooms, and he just tries to appease every parent who complains, no matter how "in the wrong" they or their child may be (not to say that teachers are never in the wrong). McGee was just a figurehead and a politician.

I can't believe how many people still fall for that Good Ol' Boy "charm."

Ticked off...Buffy here. I live in Sandy Springs, and I am a conservative Tea Part member. McGee is a manipulative man and a poor role model for children. Being popular with the kids is not the measure of leadership and competency as a school Principle. "Respected" by the students is a good measure. I dare say McGee's calculated actions in the Payne case are not to be respected. They border on criminal. Do you know him personally? Just curious since you consider him "manipulative and a poor role model." It appears to me that you are simply an ignorant busy-body who gets all their information from "newspapers" or rather tabloids. The case began 2 years ago and NOTHING has been done yet because there is no case.

If your gradfather was in fact David C. Barrow, then you would know that he did not "own" the county. Barrow county was named after him for his success as UGA's chancellor. He was born/died in Athens ! The land that is now Barrow County came from Gwinnet,Walton and Jacskson Counties in 1914.
So if he was indeed your grandfather, whoopie do, that still does not give you any say in our county when you dont live here, nor put your children in school here. I own land in Montana, but I dont have any reason to voice my opinion about their issues, unless it has to do with property taxes

I've known the McGees since I was in kindergarten, both david and pam were two of the most authentic, caring, and hard working people in the school system. AHS will have a hard time finding a replacement to match the caliber of educator he was.

Buffy, at least learn to spell 'Touche`'. As for the rest of your rantings, you're so way off-base on Mr. McGee. The only thing in which you want to direct your criticism is the "facebook" affair. Until you know all the facts, you're only judging from one side of the argument. Ms. Payne's lawyers have had a field day presenting their case in the media, and you've obviously taken a bite of their apple.

I will wait until all the facts are out before I judge. You, on the other hand, have chosen to jump right in there, regardless of what facts may, or may not, have been presented.

Excuse me everyone - but I believe we've all gotten off topic. The issue at hand is finding an excellent replacement for the upcoming spot at AHS. I believe we all want someone who will work well with the staff, parents, and students. There is no cause for name calling or using foul language in these comments. We are all just lowering ourselves. Remember, not just adults are reading this, many of the students at AHS are reading this blog. Also, just as FYI, the correct spelling is touche (with an accent over the e).

My guess would be no you don't! If you did you would NOT be making these comments. Mr. McGee is an extremely hard-working, dedicated man who cares for his students and their well-being. He is at every event possibly cheering the students on whether it is sports, academic, or the arts. He walks through the cafeteria talking to students about their interests, future, and academics. He CARES! He will be deeply missed.

The majority of the comments on this article make me absolutely sick. You adults can choose to twiddle your thumbs at home and dream up soap-opera drama in a very Winder-esque fashion, but keep it out of here and in the privacy of your "bless his heart" kitchen conversations. As a student at AHS, I can tell you I have never heard a negative thing from a student about Mr. McGee. He has been at every sporting event and school function, taking his job above and beyond what duty calls for. He genuinely cares about students and our aspirations, problems, and general character. He is one of the most genuine and dedicated men I have ever met and truly a role model for students. He has kept up with the various camps I've attended, my tennis record, my grades, etc. And that's not just a personal experience...it's a very common experience with Mr. McGee as principal. When he announced the news to the yearbook staff and student council, you had a room full of high schoolers crying...over an administrator. When's the last time you saw that happen? Mr. McGee will forever leave an impression on the student body and will be deeply missed. I am highly doubtful they will be able to find a replacement who means as much to students as McGee does.

I appreciate the fact that you can compose such a letter. We hear so much criticism in this community about our teachers and administrators...it is refreshing to read a well thought out post.

I don't know Mr. McGee, but I hate we are losing an administrator who has had such a positive impact on our youth.

Jack Leg and Curius (aka Curious)- interesting to get a spelling critique from one who cannot structure a proper sentence and another who cannot spell their nickname. For your info it is gramatically correct to add as many "o"s to touche, toooooouche, as one like likes as a way to increase inflection. You may have to look up inflection. Perhaps not at your local Barrow County library. I do not, in fact, know Mr McGee, nor have I claimed to or infrerred. I have merely articulated his lack of professional conduct, his abuse of his authority and his incompetence as an administrator. Once again, if he were without wrong in handling the Payne case, he would not have been asked to resign by the Barrow School Superintendant. Bottom line...he screwed up. And it cost him his job. Morgan, I'm sure Mr. McGee is a nice, caring man. However, he obviously fulfilled his role as a fine example of The Peter Principle. A well proven theory. Look it up Jack Leg. A man will ultimately rise to the level of his incompetence. A school principle with the core competencies to fulfill his responsibilities without creating exposure for his employer would never have participated or coordinated the rouse he was discovered to have deployed. Payne should get her job back, or compensated fairly, and McGee should be held accountable. And he has been. Case closed.

But to more important things: Nobody asked mcgee to resign, in fact he didnt resign. He retired.He worked for 30 something years paid into his pension and now will be getting back what he so faithfully gave.
Plus, he will most likely be hired back into some capacity, perhaps mentoring new administrators making 49% of his former salary and his full retirement...sweet.
Rest assured dear girl that nothing he did "cost"him his job in your ignorant words.
