On Monday afternoon, Barrow County Schools Superintendent Wanda Creel received some top level good news. During a video-conference with Gov. Nathan Deal, Creel was informed that the Barrow school system was chosen as one of five schools or school systems in the state to receive a Governor’s Race to the Top Innovations Grant.
“We are really, really excited about this,” Creel said. “It is a very broad grant that will allow us to build and enhance math, science and arts education in all of our schools, grades K-12.”
There were 70 applicants for the five grants and Creel said Gov. Deal told her Barrow was chosen because the system submitted “one of the most progressive applications” received. He was also impressed with “what we already have in place,” Creel said, adding that the grant will place Barrow well on the way to becoming a model school system within the state.
Demonstrated and effective partnerships between the business and education communities were one of the criteria for the grant. The system’s partners in obtaining and utilizing the grant are Barrow County Schools (principal lead), Georgia Institute of Technology (partner), Apple Computer Inc. (partner), ArtsNow! (partner) and the Findings Group (partner).
For more on the grant, see the Aug. 10 print edition of The Barrow Journal.
More details to follow in the 8/10 edition.
And to the idiot who posted as "iwonder", you must be one misarable p.o.s. to not be able to recognize when something goes right. ef you and the broke down mule that you rode in on.
I just wanted to take a moment to correct the list of partners for the grant. While we did have preliminary discussions with E20/20, we were not able to integrate their technologies into this particular proposal.
The correct list of partners is:
Barrow County School (Principal Lead)
Georgia Institute of Technology (Partner)
Apple Computer Inc. (Partner)
ArtsNow! (Partner)
The Findings Group (Partner)
I wanted to make sure these fine companies are recognized for the wonderful support they are providing to our students.
Thanks Lorin,
Ed
Congrats again to the BOE for taking the initiative to pursue this and hopefully we will see technology being used to prepare successful students for a successful future
The E20-20 group was not a partner in this grant. We did have early discussions with them and they make some wonderful products, but we were unable to integrate them into this particular proposal.
