The day after he publicly criticized Winder's longtime fire marshal for being too tough on downtown businesses, Jerry Maynard voluntarily relinquished his seat on the Winder Downtown Development Authority.
"After the meeting the other day and me kinda losing my cool, I'm not sure that's my thing to serve on something like that," said Maynard, one of the owners of Maynard & Bartlett Realty Group.
At the July 19 meeting, he called on city officials to terminate fire marshal Jeff Carlyle, who has worked for the Winder Fire Department for 27 years and holds the rank of captain.
However, after the meeting Maynard learned that Carlyle actually was not the employee who in late June had issued a fire hazard notice directing an auto sales business at 88 Griffith St. to stop doing auto repair work inside a building owned by Maynard's business partner, Wayne Bartlett.
Carlyle was out of town when the warning was issued, and it was former fire chief Ray Mattison who directed Lt. Tommy Evans to issue the warning.
"Obviously I made a big mistake there," Maynard said. "It wasn't Carlyle that signed that. But, yes, I think the city of Winder has a reputation for not being business friendly – with permitting and fire inspections.
"It's not friendly and I think it should be," he added. "When you are in a boom era and all kinds of investors are coming and spending money and you have an opportunity to upgrade the look and feel of the community through stricter regulations, maybe adjust it. But in this economy to not let someone open a business on a shoestring I think is a big mistake."
Maynard notified Rice of his decision in a July 20 phone call.
In an interview July 22, was complimentary of Rice's leadership of the authority.
"Mike Rice does a good job," he said. "There are things you can point at that he got done; before that it's hard to point to anything that got done. I know he's put a lot of effort into this thing and needs support. If they can downplay the DDA and not have a circus every time they have a meeting, maybe they can get to work."
He added: "They've got a good board, good business people and property owners. So I think it's got good potential. I just think it's better to keep my mouth shut."
Rice said it is unfortunate that the DDA has lost Maynard.
"I liked Jerry being on it," he said. "He was lots of help, had lots of knowldge, and was a wonderful member. It's going to be a loss for us."
Rice said there is nothing wrong with people having opinions, and it was apparent that Maynard and Bartlett were "venting."
He and Bob Dixon, who is the city council's liaison to the DDA, have since spoke separately to city administrator Don Toms about the businessmen's complaints.
Carlyle is scheduled to be back on the job next week.
1) Was the business ordered to stop doing car repairs inside the building because (as I suspect) it's unsafe or a fire hazard.
2) Did the repair/tire change/oil change place down the street have anything to do with the complaint? Drive the competition out.
Bottom line, it's listed as K & J AUTO SALES, not K&J AUTO REPAIR.
What a total disgrace they are!!!!!!!!!!
Don't cry Jerry, you can still be Yearwood's "representative" LOL LOL
Good riddance to Bad Rubbish!

That's funny. That's also the pot calling the kettle black...

I appreciate you standing for Bob, but the issue is he is just like the rest, thinks he has power and will try to do anything to show it.
Case in point when he tried to call Chief Dorsey when his "pal" was pulled over for no insurance and tried to bully the cop in not citing or towing the car, then learned he was wrong. Im sorry, this behavior is a prime example of what Winder and Barrow County does not need, it is power hungry "Good ol Boys".
He might be a nice man, but his elected status clouds his mind for what is best for Winder.
me thinks NOT
As for the "Bashing" What makes Bob Dixon any better than any of the others that are "bashed" on a daily basis here on this blog?
He has stepped in one too many times and tried to use his authority to bully officers, business owners, and the Citizens of Winder.
Join your Buddy Jerry, and do the RIGHT thing for the people....Step Down!!!!
and DuWayne; just so you know: Nobody gives a Rat's Arse what you appreciate and what you don't.
One more little piece of business to clear up; If you want to bash that's fine, but be prepared to deal
with those who do not like bashing for any reason. Anti-bashing sentiment is on the rise in Barrow County. Folk are sick and tired of it. You will hear more and more folks starting to defend against bashers as it happens. If bashers have the right to bash, then the ones who are being bashed also have the right to defend themselves in print.
DuWayne
Those were YOUR words DuWayne-LOOK BACK!
I am simply saying that we can "bash" anyone we want to on here, 1.because this is a PUBLIC blog 2.because He is an ELECTED official, therefore is automatically "Bashable" (See Tickedoff's post)and 3. because of a little thing called "Freedom of Speech"
So get OVER it, and the "Rat's Arse" comment was strictly for YOU DuWayne, because NOBODY gives a rat's arse what you say, think, or appreciate or don't appreciate.
Oh, and I don't think Barrow Countians are ready to fight "bashers." I think it is totally the opposite! For the 1st time in Forever people of this county are starting to wake up and realize that we DO have a choice!
So you Good ole Boys down there at The First Baptist Church might wanna get ready.........just sayin'
We get the two of your are either:
1. Duh Wayne
2. His wife/other family member
3. friend of his.
We get that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion; Duh Wayne just seems to think his is the only one that matters or is correct.
Beth cannot speak for everyone, she certainly doesn't speak for me. I have my own opinion and will voice it when I feel it is needed. For example, when someone feels they can speak for me without my consent. It is obvious Beth does not like this man, so be it. But let that be her opinion not mine.
All the other quotes you mentioned do not pertain to me.
I will say that I too have had issues with Mr. Maynard and I have nothing kind to say about him. But I do give him credit for his resignation and admitting he was wrong although I don’t trust his motives for doing so, I find them highly suspect. I doubt it was because he was “wrong” as he claimed.
Also, I have no idea who Mr. Anderson is. I don't particularly agree with a lot of his posts either. Beth on the other hand.. I'm speechless. I couldn't even begin to articulate how obtuse her comments are.
The quotes stand in for italics, and the caps stand in for bold.
It's no different from using __ and ** on USENET.
Why don't you stop this classist tirade and worry more about what people say than how they say it?
It's like a web forum, except the burden of managing it is spread over thousands of different organizations.
You can go all the way back to 1985 on Google Groups, which is based on Usenet: http://groups.google.com/
Beth,
You don’t have the knowledge or authority to speak for EVERYONE. I don’t know DuWayne but I am impressed with his undeniable concern for our community. I’m not saying I agree with him, but I do notice he is concerned and tries to make a difference.
Speak for yourself, not me.
If you are planning on running for public office, STOP you rants and raves. You come off like a lunatic. Secondly, ANYONE who holds public office is fair game in the bashing game -- comes with the position. If they can't take the heat, they need to stay out of the fire. Thicken your skin, boy, thicken your skin!!!!
If you have a problem with someone who holds political office, contact them and work through it.
DuWayne
You are nothing more than a raving lunatic, who has two sets of rules, yours and others -- kind-of like the "ruling" class of Barrow. There are "our" rules and there are the rules the everyday citizen has to follow.
Thanks for the heads up in case you decide to run for office -- I'll know what side of the rules fence you plan on hopping off on.
["It is not necessary, or very civil"]
First of all, YOU are the one that coined the phrase "bashing" in response to a post by "City Watcher". I, personally have not bashed anyone other than Maynard. YOUR post which read [" I don't appreciate the Dixion bashing going on here."]was the one I was replying to.
["It is not necessary, or very civil"]
It IS, in fact, VERY CIVIL here in this country(at least for now) You see DuWayne as long as my tax dollars pay the salaries of these ELECTED officials, they are subject to being "bashed" on a regular basis! As long as they continue to squander away the peoples' money they are subject to being "bashed".
Who are you to say you don't appreciate it? Is this YOUR blog?
Oh, I forgot, you go to the First Baptist Church, and so does Bob Dixon, therefore that makes you and he "special" LOL
It is locals here with mentalities like YOURS that got this county into the MESS it is in now!
and are you SERIOUS about running for office here? talk about getting "bashed"
He also said that Winder is not business friendly and he is in a position to have an informed position on this. Winder officials should sit down with Maynard and others and see if his statement is true and what might be done to make Winder perceived as business friendly.
The best thing maynard could have done was resign, the best thing dixon could have done when he was caught trying to manipulate the poklice dept. would have been to resign, bramlett should have resigned when he was caught not paying his taxes..ditto for the idiot yearwood ....again.
Lets have some honor and accountability from our elected officials, there is not one of you that we couldnt do without.
Again, why do you feel you have to defend this man? Is he not his own man and can speak for himself? I believe he spoke volumes when he admitted the mistake and then resigned his position. Finally an honest man in the Barrow Co Society. I am positive he does not need your help.
More on DuWayne, again you have shown your cry baby stupid side that most people know they do not want to vote for.
Thanks,
DuWayne
HONEY, YOU BASH THE DEMOCRATS ALL THE TIME. So please explain again, how that differs from bloggers bashing your little republican friends?
But, if you admit that you have read my blogs on this site, then your "friends" would start bashing you too...............we'll just keep that fact our little secret ok? Always good to hear from my supporters.............
DuWayne
Just friendly advise. You have made enemies on these blogs and you know every time you open your mouth you are going to get bashed. Why hurt your chances?
It doesn't matter what you say, do, or think. You will get torn-up by these folks who do nothing but hang-out here all day waiting for anyone to weigh in on any topic so they can begin their daily dose of hate and trailer park logic.
I just come for the chicks.
[trailer park (as an adjective)], is manifestly unqualified to dispense advice. In other words, your posture of superiority is empty, i.e., totally lacking in merit. Also, your newly minted acronym will probably not catch on with anyone not compelled to listen to such foolishness. Nuthin' ain't worth nuthin' -- but it's free!
btw
The hyphen is correct for Mr. Kristofferson's lyric. So keep you mispelled "nuthin'" to yourself.
Next.
That is why trying to use this blog for anything but recreational BS is just impossible and a waste of time.
This blog is a good deal like a visit to the zoo. It's OK to walk around, but don't feed the animals.
Most of the regulars are not quite as easy to draw out as our very own anal retentive spelling police, but you see how easy it is to lead them right off the topic and straight into the comfortable their individual hate zone.
So have fun while your here. But, don't take things too serious.
DuWayne
Reading your posts, like many on this site, lowers everyone's IQ. Take a break and go howl at the moon or eat a Moonpie and RC Cola.
