Maynard says city should ax fire marshal

In a shocker at Tuesday’s meeting of the Winder Downtown Development Authority, realtor Jerry Maynard called on city officials to fire the city’s longtime fire marshal.

During a discussion of an unrelated downtown initiative, Maynard said bluntly that he didn’t know anything better the city could do than to “get rid of” Capt. Jeff Carlyle.

“I don’t know how many vacant buildings would be filled if he wasn’t in his position,” said Maynard, who owns several downtown properties and for years has served on the authority.

He said the fire marshal must visit vacant buildings with business prospects and often drives them away.

“I don’t know how many people that he has been so rude to, so arrogant to, that they said, ‘I don’t want to be in business here…’” Maynard said.

He said it’s almost like there’s “bitterness toward business.”

Could it be the fire marshal has the safety of people thinking of renting the building as his top priority as apposed to Maynard who has his pocket as his top priority.

Sounds like Maynard is out for a dollar! That's exactly what wrong with this county and city, A$$hole money hungry select few wanting it all for themselves. Sounds like Maynard needs to get his crap rental properties up to code and then he wouldn't have to worry about Jeff Carlisle. Let someone get hurt or die in a fire in one of his properties and they will own Maynard!

By the way, inknow Jeff and he does business by the book like it should be, no matter who you are. Get over it Maynard and realize that your crooked money can't buy everyone!

Both the owners of the properties AND the city is to blame. The owners have gotten wealthy over the years renting to every consignment shop and church or hair cuttery that comes along. Meanwhile, the city has let code on these buildings fall by the wayside. The result,,, a downtown that is quickly crumbling and fading. The owners are ultimately responsible for the buildings to meet code. Like it or lump it.. If the owners would get off their checkbooks and fix things it would be amazing how it would revitalize the area. If the inspector is busting your chops, and its code then fix it. But hey theyd rather go build a new sandbox on the other side of 316. But do not spend taxpayer dollars downtown except for streets and maintenence. Condemn a few buildings or fine the owners and see how fast the money train gets moving.

I think the Fire Marshal needs a raise, his job is to keep run down properties up to code for the protection of people who may find themselves inside those buildings.
Jerry Maynard, google Triangle shirt waist fire, google coconut grove fire and see what can happen when the city takes dollars over safety.

Carlyle is still upset because he didn't get the fire chief position when Mattison retired. How can Winder afford a full time fire inspector? Very few cities have one. If you need an inspection you call the fire department. They do other stuff also. Not just fighting fire. We don't need a full time position for this. Especially in Winder. Just look around at down town. Doesn't appear he's doing what he being payed to do.

Looks like Maynard and Carlyle are two peas in a pod. Neither one doing their jobs.

I've only met Jerry Maynard once and my first impression was 'this guy is nuts". He tried to convince me there are volcanos in Barrow Co. I've been amazed every since that this guy hasn't been committed (yet!).

It appears the only protection he has these past years is a family connection that insulates him from the standards the rest of Barrow must adhere to.

I do not doubt he would love to hang curtains in a condemned property and call it livable.

Don't laugh too hard, but I had a teacher from a local middle school tell me the same thing. Even told me where to find it. Didn't put much stock in it then, still don't.

There certainly is a volcano in Barrow. Down near the Winder airport area. We took a field trip there while in grade school. The county museum has a History of Barrow county book and you can read about it there.

It's not about anyone lining their pockets. It's about bringing in NEW business. There is no call for being rude with prospects. Winder has to become business friendly or risk becoming a ghost town. Have you looked at downtown lately?

If it's about bringing in new business then why doesn't Maynard bring his building up to code? That would solve the problem of the fire marshal repeatedly having to mark them as unsafe.

I am a business owner, and if I were to move into one of those properties, I would want it inspected AND for it to PASS code.

God forbid, the fire marshal just sign off on it because it's one of King Maynard's properties and something were to happen.

You know bloody good and well, Maynard would hang the fire marshal out to dry!

The fire marshal IS DOING his job and IF we WANT to ATTRACT new businesses, those slum properties NEED TO BE CLEANED UP AND BROUGHT UP TO CODE SO THEY PASS A FIRE IMSPECTION

So if Winder is in a bind for money. Why are they paying for a full time fire marshal? What is the yearly salary? Sounds like a job created for someones friend or family member.
