A Statham man told police he was carjacked and held at gunpoint last Saturday night while leaving Bojangles on N. Broad Street. Police reported the man’s car was recovered and he checked out OK in the hospital with no injuries. Authorities say they think the report is likely a false claim, although the suspected carjacker may still be at large.
The complainant told a Winder Police officer that he left his job at a manufacturing plant in Gainesville the night before and went to the dollar store in Hoschton. He said he then went to Bojangles in Winder at about 9 p.m.
When he left the restaurant, he told police he drove south on N. Broad Street, then took a left on E. Wright Street, when an unknown black male with dreadlocks came up to the driver’s side window and threatened him with a gun.
The carjacker got in the back seat of the 1995 black Honda, the man told police. When they drove past Oak Hills Church, the perpetrator climbed in the front passenger seat of the man’s car and forced him to drive on Pickle Simon Road to Atlanta Highway toward Statham, he said.
