Yearwood storms out of meeting; blasts efforts to change chairman’s job duties; blames Republicans

Faced with the possible loss of his power as county chairman, Danny Yearwood said he wanted “no part” of changing the county’s form of government and abruptly walked out of Tuesday night’s meeting of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners.

The board heard from its Charter Review Committee about its proposal to change the county government’s structure, with the major point being to hire a full time administrator and make the chairman part time with no day-to-day management duties.

Yearwood said he would support anything that is the will of the people of Barrow County, but he would not participate in the discussion of the proposed changes.

”I’m not going to be a part of this,” Yearwood said. “I’m going to leave. Because I don’t support anything that takes power away from the people.”

He said it - I was there. It's really kind of sad. Mr. Yearwood acted like the kid with the baseball who didn't like the rules of the game and so he picked up his ball and went home. Whether he agreed with the proposals or not, as an elected official, he had an obligation to listen to the report. He doesn't have to support it, and he can certainly lobby against it, with the other commissioners and our state delegation if it gets that far, but he should listen. I think it was obvious that he's on the verge of losing a fifth commissioner - I think Commissioner Wilburn is getting tired of his antics. Earth to Yearwood - act like an adult!

I attended the BOC meeting, and Yearwood did accuse the Republican Party of "increasing the size of government" during his tirade before walking out in a huff. One of the most unprofessional displays I have ever seen from elected public official during a public meeting.

If you believe Danny’s dribble then you have snakes in your head. He does not care about you. He does not care about me. He does not care about Democrats. He does not care about Republicans. He does not care about Winder or Barrow County. What he does care about is his $60,000 plus a year salary plus insurance and perks. Multiply that times four years and you get close to $250,000 for his term. He knows the sales of homes are way down if he was to go back to that. He has cheated so many people in Barrow County selling cheap old cars that he can’t sell anymore. He may be able to get on disability like his car selling buddy did.

This man is not fooling too many people. He is mad because he is loosing his power AND his salary.

If you want to believe him then that is on you. But I bet most people in Barrow County are not a stupid as he may think we are.

Danny you are close to being done. You were voted in to get the other guy out. Now you are that other guy and your day is coming.

Some months ago at the behestof citizens all over the county out state
legislative team began looking at redoing the charter for barrow County.
The current commisioners balked at this because they got their feelings
hurt because they thought they were being side -stepped.Idiotwood and
company then formed their own commtiite to look at a re-charter. A
committie that they thought they could control, but now their own rubber
stamp committie has listened to the people and made recomendations in favor
of the tax payers of this county and against the idiocracey that we now
toil under.
I dont think this fight is over, we have clear proof that Yearwood and
company are NOT going to listen to the will of the people, that they are
going to continue their fiscal rampage until 2012.
Everyone need to keep the pressure on dunbwood and his cohorts .

Jack, do you ever go to the Commission meetings? Do you ever read what's in the paper? If you were at the commission meeting, then you wouldn't be saying what you are saying. The only commissioner, other than Mr. Yearwood, who expressed any significant reservations about the recommendations of the review committee was Eva Elder. She somehow thinks that this should all be put to a referendum. Unfortunately, counties, and their charters, are a creation of the legislature, and, as things stand right now, they have the final say. The best way to influence what they do, or don't do, is to let them know how you feel.

You would do well to consider that fact in the future. Win or lose, the citizens of Barrow County demand candidates who at least try to make an effort to present correct facts for consideration. attempt by our elected state legislative team to draw a recharter in the
last session and make their own committie if not because they thought they
could control it.
We all know that the charter committie recomendations have to be voted on

You however; are very obviously trying to put some kind of Anderson spin on things.

I seem to remember Yearwood and the BOC hiring their own private investigator to look into allegations that Yearwood had a temper.

I also remember this person finding that Yearwood had a temper and recommended Anger Management classes.

But Yearwood refused to attend the classes because he didn't feel he had a temper.

I'd say, he showed his true colors for all the world to see Tuesday night.

Barrow County is going down the toilet. Look around, please!! I applaud the Charter Committee and the 5 affirmatve votes to hire a County Manager. The county is losing money with Yearwood in-charge. Hire someone that has a graduate degree and experience in government. Next election, hopefully a good candidate will run that is interested in part-time and someone with experience.

Your post is 100% correct. Yearwood gets paid by the taxpayers to run all the BOC meetings, not just the ones he feels fits his personal political agenda. This is not a pick and choose decision by Yearwood. If he wants the pay, then he must do the job! As long as taxpayers foot the bill, he should do his job or resign! Are some of us confusing an elected position (which IS accountable to the voters), with a hired position (which is NOT accountable to the voters)?
Although I completely disagree with Yearwood walking out, I do agree with his comment regarding taking power away from the people when we remember that a hired administrator WILL NOT BE accountable to the people.

He doesnt have to be, the county administrator will be accountable to the ENTIRE board of commisioners not just one moron.
A county administrator does the job of running the day to day business, its hopefully someone who is qualified to do this.
Right now ,just whoever gets the popular vote runs everything,(like a king) some years you do ok because the people have elected someone who is a responsible member of society and knows how to do things. Some times we get something like Yearwood, doesnt really know anything about anything ,yet he is the one in charge.

During the Winder public meeting I was the first to speak to the issue of moving to a manager/administrator form of government. My comments were recorded and written down. My point was simple: Commissioners and or the BOC chair do not, need to run the day to day operations. We have seen the real results of trying to do this.Failed moral, leading to infighting, political posturing, and a multitude of EEOC complaints, driving up legal fee costs of the county attorney, and expensive settlement(s) that drain our already strained budget. In short, the taxpayers are getting their pockets picked. Facts are facts.
The time has come to restore confidence in The BOC.
It is time for a fresh start and new period of cooperation between the citizens and the BOC. Only working as a team, will we achieve a positive goal.
The citizens of Barrow County deserve better, and it is time to make that happen.

The current system was setup by good ol' boys from days gone by who never envisioned anyone other than one of their own ilk being elected. For many years they were right.

Danny's extremely inept handling of the position demonstrates the problem with the current system by showing what happens when an incompetent or a citizen with a contrary agenda wins the office.

Just look at the financial mess we are in that Danny inherited from the inept bunch before him.

For far to long, Barrow county has been the camel that was supposed to be a horse, but was unfortunately done by committee. Governing by committee is bad enough, but then and inexperience, greed and selfishness and you have what we have now...

We as a community will not solve the operational and financial problems of Barrow County BOC by playing the "Blame Game". We can not change what has happened in the past. How to correct those problems, and moving forward with a team effort, needs to be the main focus.

Moving to an Administrator/Manager form of county government makes sense for the citizens of Barrow County. We have seen the results of each member of the BOC trying to run some segment of the day to day operations. Failed moral in many depts. Unprofessional tactics against rank and file employees, leading to multiple EEOC complaints,as well as rising legal fees for the county Attorney, constant political infighting between Yearwood and various commissioners, which detracts from the overall goal of moving our county forward to prosperity, and finally a lack of confidence by Barrow Citizens in The BOC to perform it's function.
Continued fighting within the BOC IS NOT THE ANSWER! We must get past this pathetic "kindergarten sandbox political squabbling" and getback to the Business of running this county! The next Chairman of the BOC will have to have a more balanced approach if he/she has any intention of winning. Barrow citizens will not elect another "Yearwood" or his style of management.

Speaking for myself, I did not vote for Yearwood in the last election, and I suspect that many others did not vote for him. He was backed by the "Airport Crowd" and their resources. Sometimes I'm for a county manager, sometimes I'm not. If the correct type of county manager is hired, it would be a good thing, but if, as other counties have done, a county manager who thinks of him or herself, not of the county that person is representing or of the employees that person is responsible for then the wrong person was hired. If that person is too weak and worried about losing their job and will not stand up to the commissioners that person is hired by, then the wrong person has been hired. It happened just up the road.
Yes, I believe the wrong person was "hired" read elected by the people of Barrow County, but there was only one reason Danny Yearwood was elected, to get rid of the former commission chairman. It was the wrong reason to vote for Danny Yearwood and it was the wrong reason to elect him to office. Anyone who knew him and knew he had never been successful in any type business would have known he couldn't run the Barrow County government.
Now? We have a mess. I truly hope anonymous 17.1.1 is happy with the vote that was made. It elected someone who had absolutely no idea how to run a county government. Thank goodness that mistake won't be made again and hopefully this will be Mr. Yearwood's only stint as a county servant.
Also anonymous 17.1.1, I've lived in this "redneck" county for almost 30 years and I'm proud of that fact. Quite frankly, if you don't like this redneck county, there are roads that lead in and that lead out and I'm certain you can find your way to one of those that point to the way out. I will set the record straight on why these 3 (or maybe one) get so riled up when I post. They supported Yearwood and I did not. It's that simple.
Garrison was and still would be a better Chairman than Yearwood. I stood up against "the airport crowd" when they trumped up the big " NO AIRPORT EXPANSION" marketing program against Garrison. They were charging $10-15.00 per sign, and pounding them in every yard they could. I stood up to this crowd in the press, and on the local blogs at every opportunity, and called their bluff. That's why they attack so hard when I post. They don't like it when someone opposes their personal political agenda. Go back and look up the facts. Visit the BCN, Barrow Journal, and Athens Banner Hearld. Look up the articles, my comments,and their responses. They hope no one will remember, but sadly folks do remember what an alarmist group they were in this county. Facts are facts, wether you like it or not!

Please read the post again. I made no statement about what you are talking about. Just admit that you were a Danny supporter, and now don't like the outcome, so you lash out as a defense mechanism, attempting to divert attention away from your displeasure with Danny.
The 2010 campaign in Dist.7 that I was a part of was one of the cleanest campaigns in the state at the BOE level. There was no mudslinging, or personal attacks on any of the other candidates(Dan,Dexter)from my campaign. I kept my promise to the voters of Barrow County, a trait that is hard to find in political races these days.

My concern is for the well being of all the citizens of Barrow County, as well as the future. I did honor that platform. A promise is a promise, and I kept mine.

By the way, someone asked me why you spend so much time commenting on my posts if you don't care what I think? Seems like you could find better ways to express yourself, besides bashing all the time. But of course, that is your personal business. Others who visit this blog can make up their own mind without your constant bashing. It is getting old....very old. Well, at least you now have something else to consider...................

Propeller (the company that is wanting to privatize the Gwinnett airport) approached Barrow County about expanding our airport. Don't believe it, call Mr. Smith of Propeller Corporation and ask him.

DuWayne, if you have any ambition of running for public office, PLEASE, PLEASE stop. As a public figure,you have to be able to let remarks roll off your back.

You, my dear, are too thin skinned. Ignore the comment, shake their hand, smile politely, and move on to the next person.

Or in the case of blogs, answer the initial comment (only if it's a reasonable ?) and ignore the rants and attacks that follow.

Name recognition can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing.
