Prescription drug abuse ‘prevalent’ in Barrow

Although arrest reports show marijuana and methamphetamine as the main cause for a local drug arrest, local authorities say a rising tide of prescription pill abuse is a trend that is the most difficult to enforce.

One local police chief said prescription pill abuse in Barrow County is endemic to the local culture.

“There are no ethnic lines to it,” said Statham Police Chief Steve Martin. Martin, who came to Statham from Dekalb County, said drug use in Barrow is very different.

“It is so entrenched in the culture of the county, it’s almost invisible. It’s such a matter-of-fact part of the day that it’s not even unusual. For us, it makes it real difficult to catch because it’s not something that would be out of the ordinary… for pills to be passing hands… so when we make traffic stops, we’re actively looking for pills out of containers and pill bottles that don’t match the person we’ve stopped and all kinds of things that we wouldn’t normally have to do. The problem we’ve got here is so prevalent.”

Talk about profiling. I take prescribed meds for back pain. I have had two surgeries and they are tring to talk me into another but I won't do it. I have been pulled over a few times and charged for DIU which I beat in court but the point is these meds can also help and the police treat them as a street drug if you have them legally or not. They need to spend more time looking into the crark and meth and let the doctors deal with the prescribed drugs.

Not trying to start anything, but I also go to a pain clinic and take legally prescribed narcotics. But the simple fact is, if it impairs your mind, then you are DUI. If you are over 21 then you can legally buy alcohol but if you get drunk and drive it is against the law. So my point is, just because you have them legally doesn't mean you can just take them and drive if they affect you.

Yet the TV commercials encourage drug use for every little ailment.
Doctors give them out like candy.
Its a scam.

Most of the people who are addicted to prescription drugs know which doctors hand out these prescriptions in large quantities. Doctors are supposed to be professional and have their patient's best interest at heart; they know better,but continue to be a large part of this problem. The only motivation I can come up with for the doctors is their own personal financial gain.....sad....

I agree with you that the drugs are handed out like candy. Problem with pain meds is that the intensity of the pain is unique to the individual. I assume that is why doctors ask you "one a scale of 1 to 10, rate your pain". I may be able to handle 9 times more pain than you, therefore, I only get a small dosage. Someone who wants to score extra pills or stronger dosage can easily say they rate their pain at the highest level. Then they sell those "extra" pills out on the street to anyone willing to pay. Same thing goes for the anxiety meds that are prescribed and then sold out on the street. From what I hear around this area, the biggest offenders of selling the pain meds are actually the older/elderly adults who are on disablity and sell the pills to pay their utilities and etc. But of course, the pills and the pill sellers are not confined to one age group alone; it does not discriminate by age, sex or race!

All you have to do is go to some of these crooked doctor's in Atlanta. All you need to have is a MRI and cash. Cause they don't accept insurance nor credit cards. I know for a fact there is a crooked doctor in Lakewood and Dunwoody. I've took 2 different people to their doctor appointment's at both places. They give you prescriptions for 120 lortabs and 120 xanax at a time. I also know that they give you oxycontin.

Its all a part of law enforcements "New World Order" assualt on Americans.

Here is the scenario:

It starts in grade school, little Timmy won't sit still. Lets give him some ADD meds.

Then in middle school, little Timmy has been eating school lunches and fast-food and playing video games. Little Timmy is now obese and requires diabetes meds.

Sice little Timmy no longer runs and plays and continues with TV and video games, Timmy does not sleep well. so he gets more meds from his Dr.

Little Timmy is now a man, he is huge and angry and aggressive. He also has some behavioural and emotional problems, lets give him some lithium to keep under control.

Then one day Big Timmy gets pulled over for a traffic stop, and the cops search his car and find a couple of pills under the drivers seat and charge Timmy with possession.

Tim goes to court, but he doesn't understand, His brain is now mush "Ive been given drugs my whole life" why is it now illegal?.

Tim goes to prison on trumped-up charges, Tim is now in the throws of death.

He does not recieve his drugs in prison and dies a slow death.

Chief Martin smiles because he believes justice has been served.

The FDA and the NWO want you as a slave,
Its a law enforcement scam folks.
time to wake up and end this henious war on citizens (drugs).

Has anyone else noticed that Winder is now home to 2 pain management clinics now? I don't understand why there is a need for 2. It would seem to me that if prescriptions pills are a problem, why then do we have 2 "pain" centers? These types of places are notorious for handing out medications to anyone that walks in and says "ouch".

as ff/pmdc in barrow i run more perscription drug abuse calls than any other calls, barrow is full of seekers, i would be willing to bet 1/2 of the robberies are about perscription drugs, any takers? if you think meth and grass are your biggest problem you are sadly mistaken. if you have any doubt ask the er at barrow or ask a cop...

I believe what you are saying. I am a teacher in another county but live here in Barrow. The problems most of our kids face as far as drugs go are prescription pills. Most of the pills are not prescribed to them but to their parents and mom and dad don't care enough to keep them under lock and key. I wish these kids were as bad off as we were when we were only sneaking a beer or cigarette. Sad that I look back and find these things so slight now.

I have noticed the 2 unnecessary pain clinic's..that's the main problem! They give all these meds that aren't even supposed to be taken together to people that don't have enough since or care to do the right thing. I do also believe that 1/4 of barrow county need these meds for the right reason the others just have a major problem!! Even if it started out that these people needed the meds, it's really turned into a lot more. I'm not sure how the pain clinic doctor's are allowed to give all these different prescriptions..I think they should all be shut down!!

I agree with you totally, I live on one street in winder where 4 out of 5 people have found a way to draw disability and get pain meds.
They all supplement the disability check by selling the mass of the meds.They all shop and do what they want, I work and just get by.

Look all BS aside, legalizing drugs is notmthe answer. Yes younare absolutey correct we have been fighting the war probably longer that 40 years and are not touching one percent of the narcotics coming into this country. With that being said, let's look at it from my point of view for one minutemasmmuch as I know you really don't want to....I have dealt with numerous dealers and users in my career. Some get help and get off the dope, most do not. The ones who do not have to support the habit some way , some how. They run out of money and start stealing from family, then friends then neighbors. Then they resort to breaking into your car, home etc. You in turn file a insurance claim which will most likely make your rates go up, then everyone elses rates. It's a huge snowball effect that really does not have a good outcome. Then of of course you will have a bunch of high zombies walking around a driving cars whichmis a whole other problem in itself. Then they go to work, those who actually have jobs, get hurt, file workers comp claims and who do you think will end up paying in the long run...you , me and every other citizen who try's to do the right thing ......just a bad idea all together.

So did you read my response, I did not need to got to the website though, I am very familier with L.E.A.P and what most of them stand for. Everybody has their own opinions, however when it starts getting to the point where people, like yourself, start talking about things you know little about, thats were I get frustrated. I have no clue what you do for a living, or if you even do work, but I would never question anything about your job due to the fact a do not have all the information nor would I attempt to try an ACT like I know. I wish people would not lump everyone together. Yes, I can understand frustration, but I am 40 years old and have Crohns disease. I have rectal fistulas and have had 3 surgeries on my intestines and live in severe pain every day. I go to a pain clinic in Athens and they are very reputable. They do regular random pill counts and urine screens.

I dont sell my drugs or give them to anyone and I dont take anything except what I am prescribed. So, not all pain centers are bad and not all patients on disability are bad. But if you are on my end and reading the comments it makes me feel bad for having a disease and having to take these medicines but I need them just to get through the day.

The "pill mills" are getting shut down and the DEA will make sure of it. But the clinic I go to is very reputable and does things on the up and up.

We've got it all this week: jail guards, police dispatchers, parole officers, big city narcs, small town deputies... Let's get to it:

-In Edgard, Louisiana, a St. John the Baptist Parish jail guard was arrested June 8 after a sheriff's office investigation found he was smuggling drugs to inmates in the parish jail. Allen Meadows, 41, went down after the sheriff's office got tipped off he was smuggling dope, and that's all the sheriff will say so far. He was charged with malfeasance in office and four counts of trafficking contraband to a correctional institution. A search of his home in neighboring St. Charles Parish resulted in additional charges of possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of cocaine. He was jailed on a $20,000 bond. And he's now a former jail guard -- he was fired after being arrested.

-In Virginia Beach, Virginia, a Norfolk police officer was arrested June 9 on charges he was peddling steroids and marijuana. Officer Kristen Wayne Harris is charged with 10 counts of manufacturing or selling steroids and one count of selling pot. He also faces misdemeanor charges of selling or intending to sell drug paraphernalia and assisting an individual in unlawfully procuring a prescription drug. The offenses allegedly occurred on various dates in the last three months.

-In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a former state parole officer was arrested June 9 for allegedly asking for bribes from parolees to overlook positive drug tests or not administer the tests and for not incarcerating them when they violated parole. Kenneth Dupree, 46, is also accused of using threats of incarceration to extort and intimidate parolees into giving him money. It's not clear what the formal charges are.

-In Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, a Lawrence County jail guard was arrested last Friday after being accused of getting paid $25 to smuggle packages of pills, pot and tobacco to inmates at the jail. Adam Cozart, 24, went down after deputies were tipped by at least three inmates that he was bringing contraband into the jail. They waited for him and confronted him when he came to work, and Cozart admitted having a package for two inmates. It contained four Percocet tablets, a small amount of weed, and tobacco. He is charged with two counts of introduction of contraband into a penal facility, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into a neighboring county jail.

-In Krotz Springs, Louisiana, a Krotz Springs Police dispatcher was arrested Monday after she allegedly released two jail inmates from their cells, helped them break into the department evidence room, and then shared stolen drugs with them. Dispatcher Amanda Nall, 23, went down after the department reported a burglary to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's investigators say Nall released the two inmates, then shut off the lights near the evidence room in a bid to thwart security cameras while one of the inmates broke into the evidence room and stole the drugs, which he and the other inmate shared with Nall before returning to their cells. Nall is charged with malfeasance in office and simple burglary, while the inmates are charged with simple burglary.

-In McAllen, Texas, a former Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty June 9 to trying to sell confiscated marijuana to informants in other cases. Omar Salazar copped to federal counts of marijuana possession and conspiracy to possess marijuana. He also faces state charges in the scheme that surfaced during a raid at a stash house in Mission in 2009. He's looking at up to 40 years on the federal charges. No sentencing date has been set.

-In Jacksonville, Georgia, a former Appling County sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty June 9 to tipping off a suspected marijuana trafficker to an impending raid by a joint narcotics task force in January. Richard Crosby, 36, was present during a planning meeting for the raid, which was the culmination of a months-long undercover operation, and he admitted that he passed word to the target through a second person to stay away from home the following day because a raid was coming. He pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the distribution of controlled substances, marijuana. He faces up to 2 1/2 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000. He is out on bail pending sentencing.

-In Tulsa, Oklahoma, two Tulsa police officers were cleared and one former office was found guilty Monday in a complex federal case involving accusations of drug distribution, stealing money during an FBI sting, and planting drugs on people. Officer Bruce Bonham, 53, and Officer Nick DeBruin, 38, were acquitted on all the counts against them. Retired Cpl. Harold R. Wells, 60, was found guilty of drug conspiracy, carrying a firearm during drug trafficking and stealing US funds during the FBI sting. He's looking at a mandatory minimum 15-year prison sentence, and he was ordered taken into custody upon the reading of the verdict. Bonham and DeBruin walked despite video surveillance footage of them and Wells splitting up and pocketing cash during the sting.
