An Atlanta developer is planning to break ground within 10 days on a 72-unit apartment complex for low-income residents in Barrow County.
And the Barrow County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night voted unanimously to approve a resolution to help the same developer, MHL Inc., obtain federal or state tax credits for an additional 72 units that would be constructed a year from now.
The 144-unit Farmington Hills Apartment complex is to be built in two phases just south of Hwy. 316 off Haymon-Morris Road between Haymon Drive and Carl-Bethlehem Road. It is just over a mile from the Barrow Crossing shopping center and in the Apalachee school cluster.
The two-story apartments are for families with annual household incomes of $21,600 to $38,800, according to a 2010 market study for the development.
The project would not offer rent subsidies, but renters with individual housing vouchers would be eligible to use them at the complex, according to Kevin Buckner, president of MHL Inc.

Is there any way to fight this?
Posting your Complaints after the fact on one of the Newspaper Websites after it is done won’t get it. You have to get involved instead of just complaining.
If you don’t like the current leaders, we have elections’, VOTE THEM OUT, that is why those are held. Encourage someone respectable, honest, credible that Loves Barrow County (or Winder, Etc) that will be willing to SERVE FOR THE COMMUNITY (and not personal gain) to run for the office or you must select wisely, not just the popular person but someone who will serve and protect your community with their actions of Leadership.
It is up to US to make our City and County a better place, not just complain about it.
The BOC as usually when back AFTER all the people forgot about it and changed the scope back to what the developer asked for in the first place.
It also increases the demand for services; the very same services the BOC are so willing to cut.
Knowing that we will have low income apartments coming soon, just how willing are you as citizens of Barrow to cut the sheriff's budget?
This is not to say all people who live in low income housing are criminals, but they are very transitional.
So to sum up what Yearwood and the board of buffoons have done for the county lately.
1) screw up their chance to reduce debt with HB240
2) increase transitional population density, thereby increasing the need for the very services they want to cut.
3) tell us we can expect a 48% tax increase
BOY OH BOY
I'd say impeach but by the time everything is say and done, it would cost the taxpayers and those fools will be voted out!
I think "low income" housing could better serve its residents by being established in areas where there are jobs - say the old hotel in Broad St in Winder, or near the intersection of Georgia and Midland in Winder, or perhaps behind the Lowes and WalMart complex in Oconee County.
I really don't think our elected officials are capable of reading our minds. Perhaps if more of us told them more often they'd begin to get the picture. I believe I'll send a note to them. How about the rest of you?
Barrow County politics as usual. Same no one day and change it the minute the everyone turns their back
How are these commissioners still in office? Anyone who doesn't have a basic understanding of politics should not be allowed to vote!
I work in atlanta, now I gotta deal with the ghetto when I get home too? Oh Jesus please help me!
Who exactly are they trying to attract to our county? First, they wanted to build more starter homes, even smaller than what we have an abundance of currently. Now they have approved a low income apartment complex. It makes no sense to me whatsoever! What is wrong with these people????
The time for the people to rise up and use force upon those who usurp our rights and freedoms.
The time is NOW
We need to band together and delay it until 2012 and then I think I can promise that it wont really happen, there will be too much "red tape" by then.A recall now would just be a waste of time and money.
Make the right decesion at the ballot box folks and most of our problems will cease.
Yea, we are trying to fix up Downtown, so no those can go where "Everything New Must Go, off 316" ---and we have enough in Downtown to fix already.
You all know that once the economy rebounds, that ALOT of more people will resume coming this way don't you, I mean you aren't in a fantasy where we get new businesses and retail but add no new residents are you? We were a top 5 fastest growing county in the state before the collapse.
Thanks Barrow County Government!
The vast majority of people that make above average earnings either travel to another county for work (that'd be me) or own one of the dinky businesses our town has to offer. There is no industry here. Nowhere for people who have fallen on hard times to go find a decent job. So they will remain living in the low income units.
I love this county. I was born and raised here and i want to see it grow the right way. Just because you don't make a lot of money does not make you a bad person. Anyone with half a brain knows that. But lets all be honest, low income housing brings a lot of crime with it. Its just a fact. Would you rather stay making $20,000 a year and be helped out by supplying you with cheap living or would you rather be given the opportunity to get a better job making more money so that you are able to offer your children better futures?
I wish the commisioners would look at the bigger picture instead of temporary fixes. And yes, i understand that its not as easy as i've just made it out to be.
Like it not folks, your poor choices have more to do with your finacial situation that society does. So stop expecting society to bail you out and look at the real reasons your poor.
If the construction satisfies the zoning parameters, then it is not within government's purview to dictate the form of the construction. Funny how Republicans are all for "limited" government and reduction in "wasteful" spending until it's something that gores their bloated ox.
Answer; Crime plain and simple.
Do not envy or chastise me because I have the means to shelter and protect my family from the criminal element in todays society. It's shameful that you leftest liberals attempt to criminalize and penalize those who work hard for what they have. It has gotten to the point where those who work for their money is not entitled to keep it but those who refuse to work are entitled to the money earned by those who worked for it. Kinda backwards don't you think?
"leftest"
"those who work . . . is not"
Stay in that gated enclave, rich boy; I don't want that ignorance to escape!
But enough with the insults. If your only argument back to me is to criticize my spelling then that tells me you have no argument and I'm right and I will now put on my victory hat and do my victory dance....... LOSER!!!!
I have always and will continue to use the same moniker.
For the benefit of the obtuse
Odin (Old Norse Óðinn), the chief god of Norse mythology, was referred to by more than 200 names in the skaldic and Eddic traditions.
"Sacred Cow" not being one of them...but in Norse mythology sacred cow would be Auðumbla.
So your summation is incorrect.
That means you there troll man.
It is not a question of "bad people" in apartments, its the huge burden of having apartments and how many people it brings to a county that is already pretty much full for its infrastructure. Im glad you and your family turned out ok, however, with mass poeple living in tight spaces and with the schools and roads to capacity in the area, that is one of the main issues. If renters would be charged a "service fee" for lack of their payment to the county, maybe it would be ok, but when you can pack up and move every 6mos, why should any renter care about where they live, you have no investment.
This is a ridiculous site for low income housing. No public transportation. No access to jobs. Schools already in decline.
WE DO NOT NEED THESE HOUSING UNITS!
There is sufficient rental housing and too many HUD and bankrupt homes in this county already!
I see lots of comments on the Barrow Jounal about Barrow becoming the next Gwinnett - I'm more afraid of Barrow becoming the next Clayton Co.
