Winder-Barrow 911 merger could happen by June

Winder Police Chief Dennis Dorsey said he approves of merging the department’s dispatch center with Barrow County’s E-911 Center if it benefits the citizens of Winder. If negotiations are successful, it could happen as early as June of this year.

The Winder Police Department is the only municipality in the county that operates an independent 911 center and funds it directly. Under the current system, if a person in Winder calls 911, it goes to the county’s E-911 Center and is transferred to the Winder Police Department's 911 Center.

While still in early negotiations, talk of the merger sparked a debate at a town hall meeting last week, when a city council member told a resident regarding the county’s 911-center, “we’re already paying for it, why don’t we use it?”

Why dont they make some real sense and get rid of over priced police departments and use Deputies. It is these duplication of services that waste tax dollars.

Winder has no tax dollars to waste. They have no property tax. Using deputies would only increase the costs associated with the sheriff's department.

I think it's called robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The taxpayers are paying for Winder's PD some way or another. Either way, merging the city's PD and FD with the county agencies save taxpayers money overall.

If you look at Winder's call volume, you will see that they are necessary. The county is lucky to have enough zone units for their jurisdiction, much less adding the city limits. Why not get rid of the $ 100, 000 + salaries for people who sit behind a desk doing county/city jobs and leave public safety alone. The first time response is delayed due to not enough people, everyone will be yelling that its the police's fault. You cannot cut public safety.
