Barrow gets OK for charter system status

The Barrow County School System has been granted charter system status by the Georgia Board of Education.

The board voted Wednesday afternoon to approve Barrow's plan.

"Barrow County will be one of ten systems in the State of Georgia that will have the status of a system charter," said Superintendent Wanda Creel. "We are proud of the commitment to innovation that our school system continues to display in meeting the needs of our students and the community."

What is your plan if the students are locked into the one year requirement if this lawsuit goes the wrong way?

I don't think my kids should enroll until this legal challenge has been decided.

This issue has nothing to do with Barrow County's charter system status, which is different from a charter school.

Oh but it does! Barrow charter school "system" is getting money from the state, or so they claim. If I'm not mistaken, the BOE has denied they will lose state funding and the citizens of Barrow will foot the bill for these schools.

There are two different "charter" schools. One involves individual schools that are set up locally as "charter schools," which is what this lawsuit is about. The second is a "charter system," which is driven by the state. All school systems in the state have to pick between being "charter system," an "IE2" system or a "status quo" system. Barrow chose to be a "charter system." You can read here more info about that:

The lawsuit you pointed to had nothing to do with charter systems, but dealt with a charter school issue. It's two different subjects that are confusing because they both have the word "charter" in the title.
