The largest expense in the proposed application for a $2 million federal loan the city is trying to get to purchase the Hawthorne House and property is for a new building, not the house itself.
The new structure, estimated at approximately $1.4 million, is intended to be a social event-gathering place for daylong company retreats and conferences, and would be located on the three-acre lot where the house currently sits at 4th and Hawthorne avenues.
A budgeted $350,000 of the loan has been set aside for the actual purchase and renovation of the century-old house, right-of-ways and appraisals.
