Barrow to open new non-traditional high school

Barrow County students who are interested in attending a non-traditional high school in the county will have a chance next week to learn about a new county high school set to open next fall.

The Barrow County School System plans to open the College and Career Preparatory Academy next year and will discuss that school at a meeting on April 13 at 6:30 in the boardroom of the Barrow County Professional Development Center.

If the "non traditional" high school sounds like a success (my kids had this in Gwinnett), why dont they do this to all the schools ? Or, is this for those who cannot handle school and it just makes it easier for them, they need to be pushed and not babied

Interesting that the name of the school is College and Career Preparatory. I thought thats what all high schools we supposed to be doing? It is ironic that this school is termed as "non traditional". Truth is both high schools in this county are now "nontraditional" in the fact they have ceased to prpare our young men and women for the future. But hey what should we expect when our BOE is hearing "pleas" to rename schools after black educators and put up markers to remind everyone of our "Africain American" education history. And before anyone screams racism about my comments.... The only predjudice I have is against stupidity. Why doesn't our BOE get hold of the most important thing, equipping our young folks to be prepared for the future. Or is their only answer open anew school with a new name?

Well, if anyone ever knew how little power the BOE has over the schools, they would know it is the Super's job to come up with programs and the success totally falls on her.
I hope all members of the BOE understand that schooling today is not like it was 20yrs ago. Kids are interested and learn from technology and often their parents are off smoking meth to care if they pass. Hopefully, all members in the school system will make each high school a college prep and boot out the whining liberals who complain about why a few kids cannot be left behind

I guess I'm in the mood for spirited debate, so here goes.. First, the BOE has plenty of power when its something they want to be involved in or merits special attention they may recieve, heck they hire the superintendant.
Yet you say they have no power. Schooling is not like it was 20 years ago. Thats a huge part of the problem. If it were you'd get your backside busted at school then at home. If you failed, then you'd repeat and eventually decide to get with the program. You'd pull your pants up and your skirt down. We got our gum taken up, yet my kids can text me while in school? Yet you say learn from technology? next time you are in a drive thru, give the cashier an odd amount and let the fun begin. Better yet ask a kid to add, subtract, multiply, or divide without a calculator. But I betcha they can tell you the latest text lingo or what a wall is on facebook. The wall was what I had to face after misbehaving in school. And don't give me some parent sob story. Sure there are some terrible situations, all the more reason to better equip each child for success. I do speak with a small amount of knowledge, One child went to college on sports scholarship, played around wasn't serious, and after 2 years came home. Learned a trade and is now very successful. Another, an honor grad. Studying to be a RN.
The third will graduate next year, and attend college as well. The common comment from all three very dfferent kids. High school in Barrow County is a joke.

Did these children of which you speak graduate from schools in Barrow County? If so, it seems these joke schools educated them to the point of being productive citizens, did they not?

i agree with you 100%, it is a joke. That's why Im telling you that the members of the BOE have their hands pretty much tied behind their back as they can only vote on what is brought to the table, i.e. Superintendent's recommendation. I have emailed and called a few on various issues and unless they have heard it in front of an open meeting (means parents need to attend the meetings), they only vote on what is recommended
I hate that kids cannot count, the state is making writing in cursive obsolete as most kids type now and cannot write. The system needs to look at other successful systems and try their methods and quite worrying about AYP, if the kids fail, they fail and then maybe the parents will step up to the plate and be parents or you will have 21yr old seniors in H.S

They did in fact graduate from Barrow County Schools. One should be able to infer from reading my thread thats what I was insinuating.
I actually graduated from WBHS in 1987. My children were ill prepared for college. Heck, if you don't believe me get a visitor pass and set in an observe a class at WBMS or Apalachee or WBHS. See how busy they stay during a section of this block scheduling, which is part of the problem. Fortunately the went to private school thru middle school. Don't miss my point, I support this county, its schools,athletic programs, etc. have served on various boards, booster clubs, and committees. It ticks me off that the BOE s solution is another school to do what the existing schools are supposed to do. Hey its our tax dollars they are using to do it. And if their hands are so tied then how the heck can they make a decision to open another school and spend more money.

So the high school did NOTHING to prepare your children for their productive lives after high school. The one who learned a trade had no influence from his/her high school; the one who was an honor grad received nothing from high school, and was not prepared for college yet will earn an RN degree; and the third who will begin college this year - their high school hasn't prepared them at all. Have I got that right?

Seems to me that they were all prepared for college. Now, don't get me wrong, parents have a huge influence on their children and their education. But geez, man, give the school a little credit here.

Once again R. you are only reading the parts of my thread you want to. They themselves, not me, said they we ill prepared when they got to college. Even one professor at a local college asked another student who was struggling in math class my daughter was in if she attended Barrow County high schools and cited the lack of math teaching. I know you and I may not like hearing this stuff, but hey, at least theres 2 of us who care enough to discuss it. For instance, just this morning my child has an unacceptable grade in math by our household standards. When my wife asked him if he needed to get some extra help, he replied "no" if I turn in this extra assignmet and do another assignment after spring break then it'll bring me back up to an A. Now how much do you think he learned. Zip. Zero. Nada. My oldest went thru credit recovery in math. He didnt learn squat. The system is broken. You can blame the state, some stupid testing, or whatever, I choose to address it at the level locally. Ask a BOE member the last time they attended a math class in this county and observed it. They havent. Too busy hearing b.s. about renaming schools after African American educators, or building a new school to do what the existing ones should be doing. And yes the schools did assist my children in areas, so to humor you, they helped. There you go. Feel better now. After all, thats what its all about isnt it?

So you two concerned citizens, what are the GA state math standards now? The new Math curriculum, which was the brain child of the former GA State BOE superintendent Cox, is WAAAAAAAY beyond anything that you saw in any public school. In fact, the new middle school standards have the 6th graders graphing inequalities, something that anyone that graduated from a GA HS from 1900 - 1998 didn't see until 10th or 11th grade. So teaching kids math is SLIGHTLY harder on the teachers that we pay less and less each year.

Also - I support ANY school that will raise the graduation rate. If kids of meth head parents need smaller classes and computers to graduate, which will get us off the bad AYP lists, then so be it.

You are exactly right the new math is WAAAAAY
beyond anything I saw in public school. And its obviously WAAAY beyond anything the students have seen today. Unless of course you're a math major, but be careful I know many math teachers and they agree with me. By the way, my little ole rithmetick must have worked out ok. College Grad, College Athelete,
Business owner, made six figures last 10 years, and graduated from proudly from WBHS.
Sorry if I don't share your and your other teacher cohorts sentiments on getting your AYP met. In fact, screw AYP, I hope both schools fail it and allow the parents to choose surrounding counties that can educate students. That will give you something to graph. And if you want to teach inequalities, start teaching them their paychecks will be less than others who are better educated from another school system. All that seem a little harsh? Good. Maybe you, the BOE and academia will wake up. Need more proof, look at the poll on this site. Even more proof, read the 3 articles about the BOE in this weeks news. Lets not forget the state money wasted tutoring kids for the graduation test at 75.00 an hour, they're paying someone to do the job you are supposed to be doing. That didnt work so now will pay to open,staff,maintain, a "new non traditional" school to do what those open can't. Pretty damn sad. And the best you can come up with is you are for it if it gets you off AYP lists? Typical Barrow Co.

I would venture to say your childrens college success came in part from their private school education and you...not Barrow County High Schools. My child attends Crapalachee and I am praying to God and crunching numbers to figure a way to get her in a private christian school. I had one graduate from there but she was a bright student who needed little to no instruction so she did OK. But my second child struggles in math and gets ZERO help. Her math teacher actually bumped up her grade so she could pass and she didn't even know the math! I appreciate teachers and have several in my family and know there jobs are not easy but seriously...
