For the first time in decades, there will be a grocery store in downtown Winder.
The doors of the new Piggly Wiggly Express open at 9 a.m. today and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will follow at 12:30 p.m.
The store is at 95 N. Broad St. in the building formerly occupied by the Dollar & More.
“Downtown Winder is fortunate to get a new grocery store,” said Mike Rice, chairman of the Winder Downtown Development Authority. “It’s been 22 years since we’ve had a grocery store downtown.”


There is a brand new Ingles, right next to the old Ingles on East Broad Street.
There is a Quality Foods on East Broad Street. Has been for YEARS.
There is a discount gorcery store in the Holly Hill shopping center.
Until a couple of years ago, there was a Bi-Lo at the intersection of East May Street and South Broad.
If those don't qualify as "downtown winder" then, I don't know what does...
