An officer was dispatched to an area near Highway 316 and Highway 53 in response to a report of a man running down the road. When the officer made contact with the man, he asked him what he was doing. The man said he was trying to get some exercise so he was running home from Statham. The officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man and observed that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and that his speech was slurred.
The officer also observed that the man had scratches on his face and both arms. The officer asked if the man had been involved in an accident and the man said no. The man could not recall where he’d been drinking but he remembered that he was running from somewhere in Statham.
The officer summoned an assist to give the man a ride home and when the man pulled out his keys the officer noted there was a car key on the ring. He asked the man again if he had been driving and again the man denied it. While the assisting officer drove the man home, the responding officer searched the area for an abandoned vehicle but could not locate one.
The assisting officer later reported that there was no vehicle at the man’s residence either.

First of all, is this really a news worthy story?. NO.
Second of all, Since when does running down the road require a LEO to investigate?.
What a waste of taxpayers money.
[[When the officer made contact with the man, he asked him what he was doing.]]
leave it to the LEO to ignore the obvious, thats some great police work there.
[[The officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man and observed that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and that his speech was slurred.]].
Lets see running down the road: NOT illegal, Drinking alcohol: NOT illegal.
[[The officer summoned an assist to give the man a ride home and when the man pulled out his keys the officer noted there was a car key on the ring.]]
A car key on his key ring:OMG the horror.
Still NOT Illlegal.
Good to see the officers wasting taxpayer money TRYING to create a crime.
Did not work.

How is it not a law enforcement duty to prevent a drunk from getting ran over? What would you have rather seen done, allowing the drunk to continue running down the road until getting hit by a truck? By the way, it IS ILLEGAL to be intoxicated on a public road. The officers gave the guy a ride home as a courtesy, rather than hauling him in to the county jail and allowing him to cost us money in the court system, and him getting stuck paying fines for his actions. It doesn't seem like a story worth being in the news, but I'm happy to see we've gone another week without tragedies occurring, which would bump this kind of article from the news.
I think deputies did a fine job, and demonstrated an attidude of service by helping this guy get home safely.
