Barrow County residents are joining in the mourning of Athens Police Officer Elmer “Buddy” Christian, 34, who was shot and killed while on duty Tuesday. Officer Christian’s wife, the former Melissa Rutledge, is a native of Barrow County.
Christian was responding to a call Tuesday afternoon when he was shot by suspect Jamie Hood through his patrol car window before he could exit his vehicle. Another officer was shot and injured in the incident. Christian had been with the APD since 2001.
Visitation for slain officer Buddy Christian will be held Saturday, March 26 at Bernstein funeral Home at 3195 Atlanta Hwy. Athens.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 27 at the Classic Center in Athens at 2 p.m. Following the service, a procession will travel to Evergreen Memorial Park at 3655 Atlanta Hwy. for internment.
Christian’s wife, Melissa, is the daughter of Paulette Watkins and the granddaughter of Bennie Ruth Watkins and the late Paul Watkins, all of Winder. She attended Hope Christian Academy in Barrow County and is a 1994 graduate of Athens Christian School.

I pray that they catch this criminal very soon. God Bless his entire family. Officer Christian is an example for us all. He paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting his fellow man. Heaven welcomed another angel.
