There was more bad economic news for Barrow County after a local trucking company announced it would be closing its doors in Auburn and cutting 102 local jobs.
Greatwide Dedicated Transport, a trucking company that has had a branch in Auburn since 2006, said last month it would close its operation.
As of early this week, 23 drivers were left with the firm and four will be gone by March 20, officials said. Notice of the closure was given to employees Feb. 1.
The closure comes on the heels of an announcement by 84 Lumber that it would shutter its Barrow County store.
Last month, the unemployment rate in Barrow County hit 10.9 percent, up from December’s 10 percent rate.
Knowing the only reason they bought Southpoint Trucking was too show it as a loss. Forget the people that made it a success and a great place to work at.
