Winder utility programs director Roger Wilhelm reported that the city sold 13 items last month for just over $41,000. One of the items, a brush truck that cost the city $13,000, was sold for almost $12,000.
“We got great results. It’s an exciting program,” Wilhelm said.
At Tuesday night’s meeting, the council approved offering several other items for sale on GovDeals.com including two pickup trucks, a compressor, a trencher, a light trailer, ditch witch and a dump truck.
The council also approved a joint application with Barrow County for Employment Incentive Program (EIP) grant funds. The grant will provide funding for public sewer infrastructure improvements to address the wastewater needs of Olympic Steel. The grant will provide the $500,000 needed to construct the necessary sewer lines.
As part of the agreement with Olympic Steel, the city has agreed to waive $45,000 in capacity fees in consideration of the 50-100 jobs the company is expected to bring to the area as part of its southeast regional sales office. If Olympic Steel fails to create those jobs, they will have to reimburse the city for those fees.
The city will commit $86,300 in cash for annual audits of grant funds, engineering fees and grant administration services.
In other business, the council:
• tabled a change to the city’s sign regulation which would allow only one roof sign per building. The previous ordinance had allowed one roof sign per building entrance. The proposed ordinance must first go before the planning board.
• approved part two of the Georgia Municipal Association’s gas operations and maintenance procedures. The new procedures must be adopted by all municipal natural gas systems in the state by August 1.
• approved a beer and wine permit for the Quick Pantry located at 141 N. Broad Street.
• approved a request to rezone 7.848 acres at 644 Miles Patrick Road from R-1 (residential) to A-1 (agricultural.
• approved a conditional use permit for a daycare to be located at 116 West May Street. The property is currently zoned B-1.
• Recognized downtown development authority members Mike Rice, Ronney Massey, Mike Cain and Patty Faglier for completing a seminar at the Georgia Municipal Association conference in Savannah. DDA member Mike Rice said the seminar was very beneficial. “I think we got some great things out of it and I think people will see some improvements in downtown Winder because of it,” he said.
