Jessica Brown, staff photographer for the Barrow Journal, recently won a first place award in the Canon & Pro Football Hall of Fame “Why Do You Love Football?” Amateur Photo Challenge.
Brown’s photo “Flag From Afghanistan” took first in the Teen Feature Category. Brown just missed winning the contest’s grand prize, a trip to this year’s Super Bowl in Texas. Brown won a new camera and printer plus a $500 gift card to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Brown has worked for the Barrow Journal since its inception and is a senior at Winder-Barrow High School where she has served as editor of the school newspaper.
The award-winning photo was taken prior to a WBHS football game during the 2010 season. Brown captured the players carrying the flag, which had flown in Afghanistan, onto the field.
Brown has been recognized as the youngest award winner from the Georgia Press Association. She has also garnered awards from the Georgia Sports Writers Association for her photography for the Journal. She had three photos selected for the national contest this year, which was then voted on over the Internet.
“Once again we are extremely proud of Jessica,” Barrow Journal editor Chris Bridges said. “She is a valuable asset to our paper each week. She constantly produces award-winning work.”
This year marks the fourth consecutive time Brown has been a finalist. She is the daughter of Steve and Brandie Brown of Winder.
