County employees are getting paid late this week because of the winter storm. And some apparently didn't know about the payroll snafu until today, when their scheduled paychecks didn't arrive on time. Some called the Barrow Journal to ask what's going on.

Earlier today, commission chairman Danny Yearwood acknowledged the problem.

He said the deadline for inputting employees' hours into the county's payroll system was Monday, which was in the middle of the storm.

While some supervisors looked ahead and finished their payroll tasks last Friday before going home for the weekend, others did not.

That is why Yearwood asked department managers and elected officials to come to work today just to finish payroll. Two Finance Department employees also worked at the county building all day processing the managers' data, he said.

However, as of early this afternoon, the chairman could not pinpoint exactly when county employees should receive their paychecks. He said if the payroll were finished today, checks would go out Friday.

If not, the money might not become available until next week, he said.

Manager should be able to access the system from their home. I can at my company and have been able to for years. If I don't get all my work done before going home, I can simply log in and finish it.

As far as the supervisors who didn't "look ahead" and enter the information of Friday -- why are they supervisors? Isn't part of being a supervisor stepping up to the plate when needed? This storm came as no surprise. Employees should not have to suffer because of bad management and leadership, but that seems par for Barrow County -- bad management and leadership.

It's amazing that Barrow County wants and does pay these supervisors and department heads big time money but obviously all or most of them have no common sense!!
Typical Barrow County!!
When the election comes, we not only need to clean house on elected officials , we need to terminate department heads across the board!

Although I agree with you for the most part, this is a reason I never lived from pay check to pay check, or on borrowed money, such as credit cards. I most always saved for a rainy day, such as this and kept several hundred dollars on hand for such an event. I think all employees, as well as our government, should live by the same rule, as I firmly believe that our economy would remain in good financial health as the result.

I agree with you, people should be putting away for a rainy day, but honey this was NO RAINY DAY!

The issue here isn't whether or not county employees saved for a rainy day, it's the TOTAL LACK OF LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN BARROW COUNTY GOVERNMENT!

I don't live pay check to pay check but I'd be DAMN PISSED if this happened to me.

I'd BE FIRED OR AT BEST REPRIMANDED if I didn't get payroll done in time.

You value your employees and they will value you.

Yearwood likes to "MICROMANAGE" so why wasn't he micromanaging his supervisors/managers to make sure payroll was entered Friday before they left? Maybe because he's an idiot who doesn't understand how payroll works, and/or he doesn't value the county employees.

I'm sorry but it's not every1's business if they live from check to check or not! They worked for their money & should be paid when they are expected to be paid! As we all know the county does not pay very well & they are working for almost nothing compared to what other counties are paying! The county should have to pay any bounced check fees or other fees that come from the employees being paid late!

And people wonder why the employees "complain" about working for the County or how they get treated. Don't see many stories from the private sector like this. Maybe if we stopped talking about the workers complaining and looked at the "leaders" of the county, they things might start to get a little quieter.

there is just no excuse for this! Employees work for pay; they deserve to be reliably paid. This storm was no surprise. That fact that it caught the powers that be payroll-wise at the county with their pants down is just more fodder for the notion that massive change is needed in our county government!

How about the employees who may have had bounced check fees because of this, or worse, a mega bank that does not care and returned their checks and/or other payments NSF to cause the employees more fees???? Is the county going to pay the employees back for these charges??? This just go to show how Barrow County can't handle a crisis such as snow and what would they do in a large situation???????

Legally I don't think the county is responsible for NSF fees charged by the bank, EVEN if your paycheck wasn't received on time.

If you bank locally, you might try talking to the bank manager; just ask. I'm sure they are aware of the county screw up (AGAIN). You never know, they might wave the fees.

If you don't ask, you will never know.

Wow so many ungrateful sods on the comments, i myself would just love to have a cushy country job and benefits! i would come to work on time, work extra hard and NEVER complain if i had a cushy government job. If any HR personnel at barrow county government want to replace a few of these ungrateful people, id be happy to step up and talk their places! i could probably take the place of TWO of these whiners.

The City I work for had no problem paying me. Maybe its just another Barrow brain fart.
