Officers from the Winder Police Department were dispatched to Athens Street Dec. 31 in reference to a shoplifting. While en route officers learned that the stores loss prevention officer had followed the subject to a restaurant in Winder.
Upon arrival the loss prevention officer explained that he witnessed Charles Shields place a pair of headphones inside his jacket and then zip it up to conceal them.
The store LP officer explained that he caught up with Shields outside the store and retrieved the headphones but wished to press charges for shoplifting so he called police and followed Shields across the street.
Shields explained that he had actually paid for the headphones and that he did not steal them.
While searching Shields officers found two unopened packs of AA batteries and a watch that was still in the display case it had been in on the store shelf.
After being questioned about the watch and batteries Shields explained that he had bought the watch from someone on the street in Athens and could not explain where the batteries came from.
The store LP officer could not determine if the watch had come from his store or not, but told officers he would check.
Shields was then placed under arrest and transported to the Barrow County Detention Center.
After running a criminal history report on Shields, officers discovered he had at least four previous shoplifting convictions.
