Officers from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a gas station Dec. 5 on Loganville Highway in response to a shoplifting.
Upon arrival officers noticed the clerk pointing to a woman getting into the passenger seat of a pickup.
The woman was identified as Sandy Zoz. She was asked if she had taken anything from the store and she explained that she got a beer and forgot to pay for it.
Officers immediately noticed the smell of alcohol and asked Zoz if she had been drinking and she told them she had at least a six pack and when officers asked her if she knew it was illegal to purchase alcohol on a Sunday she replied, “Oh.”
Zoz explained she was driven to the store by Tommy Tanner, who was driving the vehicle she was in.
The store clerk explained she saw Zoz walk into the store, get a 40-oz. bottle of Bud Ice and placed it in her hoodie then walk out of the store.
A witness at the store claims Tanner walked back in the store in an attempt to pay for the beer. When officers questioned Tanner, they discovered that he had also been drinking. Tanner explained that he saw Zoz exit the store holding the beer but he thought that she had paid for it. Tanner said he had consumed about three or four beers prior to driving to the store from Athens.
Officers also found an open container of beer in the front seat in arms reach of Tanner. After consenting to a breathalyzer test, Tanner was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alchohol, and Zoz was also arrested for shoplifting. They were both handcuffed and driven to the Barrow County Detention Center.
