BOE recognizes system staff

In addition to honoring students, the Barrow County Board of Education also honored system leaders and staff members Tuesday night.

The BOE thanked retiring District 4 member Larry Ballard for his three years of service. Ballard said it had been “a great honor.” His successor, Will Dunn, will be sworn in at the Jan. 11 board meeting and said he is looking forward to beginning his term.

Thirty-year Georgia School Board Association member Vernon Payne also paid a visit to the board. He commended it for “running a tight ship” and said the school system has “a lot to be proud of.”

The grandfather of two Barrow County graduates, Payne said he is the longtime director of 15 school systems and 13 counties, and “just loves getting out to visit” the systems he represents.

ADDITIONAL AWARDS

The board also recognized:

• The Performance Learning Center as the Clean School of the Month for November.

•Auburn Elementary School for winning the November Elementary School Staff Attendance award with 95.54 percent all-staff attendance. Winder-Barrow Middle School was the middle-high school category winner with 94.63 percent attendance.

•Holsenbeck Elementary School’s Hawk Eye News Crew, under the supervision of media specialist Karen Gamblin, for their creative, lively and informative daily broadcasts on the school’s news channel.

•Westside Middle School student Estelle Kouassi, for winning second place in the Winder Noon Lions Club Peace Place poster contest.

RECENT PERSONNEL ACTION

After a closed meeting on Nov. 30, the BOE approved the following personnel actions:

•Hiring recommended certified personnel: Jennifer Hintze, special ed teacher, Russell Middle (RMS); Samantha Jackson, grade 4 teacher, Yargo Elementary (YES).

•Hiring recommended classified personnel: Fred Baughcum, head custodian, Haymon- Morris Middle (HMMS); Geraldine Cantrelle, bus driver; Angela Cronic, bus driver; Reynaldi Dama, custodian, Apalachee High (AHS); Mary Hall, bus driver; Robert Lee, custodian, Winder-Barrow Middle (WMS); Angelique Mull, bus

driver; Candace Scoggins, kindergarten paraprofessional, Bethlehem Elementary (BES); Gary Williams, bus driver; Erika Wilson, special education paraprofessional, Statham Elementary (SES).

•Hiring recommended substitute personnel: Alison Bradley, Leslie Brown, Ashley Douthit, Brian Eldridge, Kathryn Elford, Dorothy Eppinga, Evelyn Ethridge, Tracy Ferro, Emily Gordon, Amy Holman, Gloria Isreal, Zeb O’Brian Lackey, Kristen McMillan, Jennifer Nesbitt, Barbara Parks, Laura Payne, Heather Praats, Brandy Rowley, James Shannon, Amy Sue Shields.

•Resignations and separations: Patricia Bunster-Kunard, Susan Davis, Connie Hall, Teresa Kennedy, Joann Lee, Julie Tittle and Darlene Bargas-O’Connor.
