LETTER: Congratulations to Barrow Journal

Dear Editor,

I would like to congratulate Chris Bridges and the entire staff of the Barrow Journal on the occasion of the publication’s second anniversary.

Before I settled in Barrow County, I lived in small towns all over the United States. I have always enjoyed reading the local weekly paper in whatever town I happened to find myself residing.

I subscribed to this newspaper expecting the usual church news and local high school sports coverage. I got that stuff and was surprised to get more. This is a real newspaper. These folks are reporters. I would be willing to bet that the Winder City Council and the Barrow County Board of Commissioners wished that all that this newspaper covered was church news and high school sports.

The staff of this newspaper has held no quarter when it comes to reporting the sometimes embarrassing exploits of our elected officials. Although I think that I sense a definite political bias from some of the staff, the bias has remained where it belongs; on the editorial pages. It has never bled over into the news.

In an era when print media seems to be on the decline, I am pleased that our local paper is going strong. My only criticism is that the Barrow Journal is only a weekly. I would like to see it published daily. Keep up the good work.
