Barrow Farm City tour set Wednesday

Each year the Agribusiness community celebrates Farm City Week beginning the week before Thanksgiving and ending on Thanksgiving Day.

Farm City Week is a chance to bridge the gap between farmers and urban dwellers. Both of their lives are so dependent on each other but yet so different. Non-farmers depend on farmers and ranchers to produce food and fiber for existence while farmers depend on the sale of their crops and livestock to support their families.

Communities across the nation hold Farm-City events ranging from banquets to tours to job exchanges. This year we have set up several farm and non-farm stops to help you learn a little about Barrow County.

The tour will start at the Barrow County Extension Office at 9 a.m. (90 Lanthier St. in Winder) and visit Southern States Farmer’s Cooperative, Gene and Matt Tractor and Hutchings Cattle Farm and Integrated Technology Systems, which specializes in designing and manufacturing high tech products , services and solutions for the law enforcement community.

Lunch will be provided by the Barrow County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. The tour begins at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday and will conclude by 2 p.m.

The 2010 Farm City Tour is sponsored by the Barrow County Farm Bureau and the Barrow County Cooperative Extension Office. There is no fee to attend but registration is requested by calling 770-867-2188 (Farm Bureau) or 770-307-3029 (Cooperative Extension).
