WBHS student charged after bringing gun on campus

WBHS principal Al Darby said a student at the school alerted officials that the juvenile male had a handgun in his possession. Administrators and the school resource officer promptly investigated and confiscated the unloaded weapon.

Darby said the juvenile did not explain why he brought the handgun to school and emphasized that the incident posed no threat to students.

The juvenile is currently suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary panel.

In an unrelated incident, a 14-year-old Winder-Barrow High School student was charged with possession of a controlled substance after being caught with marijuana on school property.

A school official said he received information that four students had left campus after exiting the bus on the morning of Oct. 28.

The official located the teens near the place where they had last been seen and began questioning them. During the questioning, the official noticed a strong odor of marijuana on one of the students.

The official escorted the teen back to the school and into the principal’s office. During a search of the student’s property, a school official located a small amount of marijuana in the 14-year-old’s jacket pocket.

The teen admitted smoking marijuana that morning and was subsequently charged.

Darby said both incidents demonstrate the good relationship which exists between students, school administrators and the school resource officers.

In both cases, students notified officials after witnessing prohibited behavior.

“Our kids do a wonderful job of helping keep our school safe,” Darby said. “Our kids want their school to be a great place to come and learn."

Darby commended the student body, faculty and administrators with promptly and safely handling both incidents.

“I’m just proud of our folks,” Darby said.
