The Barrow County Animal Shelter held an open house Oct. 14 to allow members of the public to visit the shelter’s new facility.
The two-hour event included tours of the shelter, refreshments and information about the shelter’s need for volunteers.
Animal Control Director Jimmy Terrell is in the process of launching a “Friends of the Shelter” program. Volunteers are needed to assist with adoptions, care for the animals, provide foster care and spread information about the shelter.
In addition to volunteering at the shelter, donations of supplies and money to properly care for the dozens of animals that enter the shelter weekly are always welcome. Donations of blankets and towels, kitty litter, animal treats and snacks, factory sealed packages of quality dry pet food and temporary outdoor wire pens are needed.
The Barrow County Animal Shelter has established a fund to provide needed items and equipment not included in the shelter’s operating budget. To contribute to this fund, make checks payable to the Barrow County Animal Shelter.
To join the Barrow County Animal Shelter volunteer team, individuals 17 years of age and older must complete an application. Youth ages 15-16 can volunteer but must be accompanied by a parent for all volunteer sessions.
After submitting an application, volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation session.
Anyone wishing to volunteer should contact Animal Control Supervisor Missy Burrell at 770-307-4969.
The Barrow County Animal Shelter is located at 610 Barrow Park Drive in Winder.
