The company, MC Plastic Recyclers, will take high-density polyethylene plastics and process them for re-use by manufacturers.
Plastic containers such as milk crates and bakery racks will be fed into a grinder, shredded into quarter inch pieces and then resold. The mechanical process uses no chemicals or heat and involves no wastewater.
Charles Fleeman, president of MC Plastic Recyclers, said the price of polyethylene plastics has doubled over the past five years due to rising petroleum costs.
Fleeman said his recycling company will enable manufacturers to save as much as 50 percent in material costs. Recycled polyethylene plastics cost between 40 and 50 cents per pound compared to 80 cents for newly manufactured plastics.
Fleeman said he expects his company to employ three to four people initially, but hopes to see that number grow as demand for his product increases.
