A request from local officials that Barrow County parents observe Halloween trick-or-treating this year on Saturday, Oct. 30, instead of Oct. 31 continues to generate controversy.
On Sept. 30, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, acting as the spokesperson for local mayors, police chiefs and county commissioners, issued a press release advising parents of the request.
Since issuing the release, Smith has received several phone calls and emails from parents opposed to the plan. Smith said one person even accused him of attempting to “ruin our national holiday.”
Smith has tried to reassure concerned citizens that the request is just that – a request.
“It is not anything set in stone,” Smith said. “It was merely a recommendation.”
According to Smith, he and other local officials met and unanimously agreed that it would be better to observe Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 30.
“I met with every mayor. I met with every police chief or their agency. I met with all the public safety. I met with the chairman and we all agreed to make a recommendation,” Smith said. “Everybody in that room agreed that Saturday would be a better time.”
Though no particular safety concern prompted the decision, Smith said when Halloween falls on a Sunday, it is typically observed the day before or after.
For Smith, it does not matter when people choose to celebrate.
“Public safety will be out both nights,” he said.
Smith said his only concern is that children and their families will be safe no matter which night they chose to trick-or-treat.
“I’m not trying to ruin everybody’s fun,” he said. “We want everyone to be safe. We want the kids to enjoy themselves. We want the parents to enjoy themselves. As long as they’re safe, we’ve done what we needed to do. “ Though surprised by the controversy the request has generated, Smith said he is more than willing to take the heat.
“If this is the only problem Barrow County has, we’re in pretty good shape,” he said.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reminds parents and children to observe the following trick-or-treating safety tips:
•Carry a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility.
•Small children should always be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
•Older children should trick-or-treat in groups for greater safety.
•Never enter someone’s home without permission from parents.
•Do not eat any treats until a parent or responsible adult has inspected them.
•Walk only on sidewalks or the furthest edges of streets, against traffic flow.
•Cross streets only at intersections and not between parked cars.
•Approach only well-lit homes on a predetermined route.
•Attach reflective tape to treat bags for added visibility.
•Always walk, don’t run.
•Don’t cross through yards or alleys to get to the next house – use sidewalks.
•Make sure that masks are properly vented and do not obstruct visibility.
•Buy only flame retardant costumes or make a special homemade costume.
Thank you for taking consideration for our kids safety not only during Halloween but all year round. Thank you for your service and support. May God continue to Bless the work that you do for this community.

IM 26 SINGLE WITH NO KIDS.MANY LIKE ME ARE GOING TO THROW ADULT HALLOWEEN PARTY .SINCE WE HAVE TO WAKE UP AND WORK MONDAY ,SUNDAY WE DO NOT PARTY.SO IS SAFER FOR YOUR KIDS TO GO ON SUNDAY.NOT SATURDAY.WE GONNA DRINK AND BE YOUNG ,SINGLE AND CARE-FREE AND A LOT OF CLUBS HAVING HALLOWEEN MONSTER BALL..MANY DRUNKS OUT THERE.. NO CLUE WHY THE MAYOR AND SHERIFF THINK IT WILL BE SAFER FOR YOUR KIDS.DO NOT KNOCK ON SATURDAY I WILL BE OUT HAVING FUN AND MAYBE HOOKING UP WITH A WITCH.LOL..
Folks can do whatever they want. We're going with Saturday.
( Church and State)..
My son will go to church in the morning .then later he will dress like super-man and trick and treat. To him Halloween is just dressing up and getting candies..Nothing evil. And as parents we will take him out and keep a eye on him.So Sheriff Smith,As a parents I will take care of my child even on Sunday. You go and catch all the bad guys that are out no matter what day is it..
My neighbor is a police for Duluth. He has no idea why they want to move it to Saturday..He said Friday and especially Saturday is the busiest nights for police...
What bother us and lots of parents was that we did not get a vote or a chance to voice if we wanted Halloween on Saturday or Sunday..It was done within close doors with Chairman and Mayors ,but not with the common folks in Barrow..Parents should have been involved in this request..Thats all..
I think this is really the issue that is mostly bothering a lot of people.
Then on SUNDAY, Auburn First Baptist Church will be having their HARVEST DAY at 4:30, also to include lots of games and prizes and fun!!!
THERE YA GO, TWO WHOLE DAYS OF HALLOWEEN FUN!!!! (and enough candy to scare the tooth fairy)
What gives these clowns the power to legislate when we celebrate a HOLIDAY? Sheesh...vote the bums out.
"Halloween Trick or Treat will be observed on October the 30.." If you do not believe me go to the Barrow County Sheriff page..If it was a suggestion then they should have ask if we can please observe halloween on the 30th ..But they wrote "Will" be observed not we suggest..I guess Barrow county folks just want a say so..
One thing is for certain. Candy sales will go up in Barrow County and that will make retailers happy, and while the cash registers are ringing, additional sales taxes will be collected, perhaps saving some poor souls job at the BOC............ in the future.......see...behind every dark cloud hides a silver lining.....
Happy (or unhappy) Halloween to all, whenever you decide to celebrate! I personally feel sorry for the Teachers in this county that will have to deal with the all the caffeine attacks that are sure to show up with students on Monday morning from eating 2 days worth of candy instead of 1.................. :-)
DuWayne
More candies and tummy ache and money going in Barrow county to save a poor soul job..
many poster had commented that Sheriff Smith said is for the children safety.I copy and pasting a comment he said.if you not sure you can read it your self..
.Though no particular safety concern prompted the decision, Smith said when Halloween falls on a Sunday, it is typically observed the day before or after.
Is plain English if it falls on Sunday is observed the day before or after..So is not a safety or even school day issue. Is a Sunday issue..Just Sunday ..They just feel maybe is to evil for Sunday..
REAd..
So it isn't a safety issue, Must be a religious one. What happened to separation of church and state?
He must be cousin to Christine O'donnell who is running for senate and had no clue that the 1st amendment talks about separation of church and state..
I agree that kids do not care what day Halloween falls as long as they get candy. But please, say the truth to us adults..Is because of Sunday!I voted for you at least be honest with us..
Though no particular safety concern prompted the decision, Smith said when Halloween falls on a Sunday, it is typically observed the day before or after.
IS NO PARTICULAR SAFETY CONCERN...PEOPLE.SMITH SAID AND YOU CAN READ IF HALLOWEEN FALLS ON A SUNDAY THEN THEY CELEBRATE IT ON SATURDAY OR MONDAY..I guess he is worried to upset the church people...
Think this little "request" has back fired on them and they will think twice about making the same request next time Halloween falls on Sunday. My front porch light will be on Sunday only!
And, BTW, to the constitutional scholar who thinks "separation of church and state" is mentioned in the 1st amendment: It's not. That phrase comes from the sainted T. Jefferson.
Christine O'Donnell may be an idiot and a witch, but at least she's not an avowed communist.
The sheriff even said,Is no safety issue is just that when it falls on Sunday they tend to celebrate a day before or after..So it must be a religion reason..But,I grew up as a Catholic and my church would have Halloween party, they just ask not to dress like a witch or some evil thing. And when it did fall on Sunday. No big deal.Church in the morning ,then after noon halloween..I understand if is a religion issue to him,but is not my religion..I do not force my religion views to others,so I do not want your religion views impose to me.If Its a sin.then the god lord will deal with me..you off the hook.
Christianity rooted from Judaism .First testament is the Jewish Bible. But then Christ came and the Catholic religion was born. The Catholic for what ever reason changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. Not god, not Jesus ,is was men of the Catholic religion. Is history and you can go and see for yourself..
As for Halloween .It is pagan .But not Satanic.Half of us has Celtic heritage in us.Halloween comes from Celtic history.Read you find is amusing by not evil or satanic. Is part of the Celtic history.Do what you think is right in your heart .I'm not going to say if you should or not do Halloween. Is up to you as a parent .God loves you he gave his only son to you.Halloween to him is nothing.Just silly things we human do for candy.
God Bless..
for sure will be there.
Some one Sated Saturday is full of drunks and what not.Yea it is..Busiest days on any Bars and Club is Saturday..
Happy Halloween.
This go for the "Jack -ass" that will come and help us new folks pack.Your welcome to come to my home.I will greet you like we greet intruders back in Virgina.
Not the pagans..
SO HOW THE REST KNOW ABOUT SATURDAY BEING HALLOWEEN .I WAS GOING BY THE CALENDAR THAT EVERY AMERICAN IN USA GOES BY..I will do what the ladies suggest go to The Mall of Georgia Sunday and Saturday they playing a movie in Auburn at 7 pm kids can come dress..
Thanks Barrow I got your property tax infor but not the one about Halloween..
Hopefully Thursday Thanksgiving will be the same like the rest of USA>!!
There are much bigger things to obsess about.
If you don't want your children to trick or treat on Sun, send them out on Sat.
If you don't want your children to trick or treat on Sat, send them on Sun.
If you want to give candy out either or both days, leave your outside lights on, if not turn them off the day(s) you don't want to have trick or treaters.
There problem solve --- move on......
Who ever said it was going to be 30 th.Has really no right to change a date. That's why it can not be enforce. He or she or who ever would be violating my rights ....
I'm not really upset about Halloween I'm more upset with these politician that had the nerves to change a date with out asking me or the town folks..
And to those folks telling us to get a life
or stop fuzzing.I'M SORRY I DO NOT WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO TELL ME WHEN I COULD CELEBRATE A DAY IN THE CALENDAR...
Last time Halloween felled on a Sunday. The mayor just made a curfew from 5-7.After 7 it was over.
It worked out great a few hours of Halloween and no one confuse or mad .Kids was home on time to go to bed early..
BTW, stop blaming the educators for your children not doing well in school. Read some of these previous posts, then wake up and smell the coffee.
I actually enjoy all this fuss.Is amusing better then hearing about what Yearwood did or what Human resource did not do.Or how broke Winder is at this moment..
And I think to parents Halloween actually matters because as you can see they are pissed. If you do not like it then just do not read it..
You sound like THE GRINCH THAT STOLE HALLOWEEN.
I love that
THE GRINCH WHO STOLE HAlloween..
WILL THE GRINCH WHO STOLE HALLOWEEN PLEASE STAND UP??
FUNNY...Look at the bright side.two days of Halloween ,not bad for a bible belt town!
A friendly advice ,easy on the caffeine you seem to be a angry person to us Country Folks...
I think the only people this would really matter to anyways are those "Sunday Christians" who think that as long as you go to church on Sunday, you can live the way you want to the rest of the week. Because if celebrating halloween is wrong on a Sunday, then what makes it okay any other day of the week?
Ladies beware you be branded a witch and burned at the stake too!
I thought this city was moving forward not back wards. If the stupid trick or treat falls on a Sunday ,who cares is just a stupid day for kids to get candy.
Going to change Super Bowl too?It always falls on Sunday. And I seen lots of good so called Christians curse over the darn game and drink a beer here and there. Then you going to turn around and move Halloween because is falls on Sunday.BS!
SO BUY LOTS OF CANDY AND IF THEY KNOCK ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY DO NOT BE A JERK AND DENIED THE KIDS.NOT THEM WHO MADE CONFUSION .
Based on what I've read, there is no indication the change is motivated by safety or religion. No reason for the change is given at all. This has caused a huge amount of controversy at least on this web site and I have seen everything from holidays, religion, and politics be attacked to personal attacks against one another. I just hope whenever people take their kids out to celebrate Halloween this year, they do so in a safe manner.
Some subjects should be left alone. This day should have been left alone as well.If it falls on Sunday then so be it.It is what it is.
sunday comes 52 or so times a year.
what's the big deal..let the people have Sunday night .
talk about greed.
What's the Deal?Even Winder police page says the same thing.
I have faith in you to keep us safe. But,Jud sorry your not an event planner or you have the right to change dates that is older then us put together.
If is religion then sorry ,not Baptist like you.I'm Lutheran .
Enjoy a Happy Halloween ,Will be at the Mall.
Not use to this.grew up in a big Catholic Irish
family. When Halloween came on Sunday,no one got bent out of shape.Mass in the morning T-O-T afternoon.Nun made cup-cakes.
Michigan is so totally different then here.
Home Sick.
fOR A COUNTY THAT PRIDES THEM SELF FOR BEING A BIBLE BELT COMMUNITY AND GOD-FEARING FOLKS.YOU TURNED A ONE DAY EVENT INTO A WEEKEND EVENT.JUST BECAUSE IT FELL ON SUNDAY ..
JUD, SAID IT WAS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN,HE EVEN SAID WHEN IT FALLS ON SUNDAY IS USUALLY DONE A DAY BEFORE OR DAY AFTER.SO PROVES THE POINT IS NOTHING TO DO WITH SCHOOL NIGHT EITHER.
SO WHY ?
?
Here's a thought..... when was the last time you saw 110 comments on any issue in Barrow County that had to do with the BOC or spending money?
Looks like Halloween/candy/safety/religion/(or lack there of) is now the most important topic here in Barrow County........... Maybe if the BOC decides to change the normal scheduled dates of it's meetings at the last minute, folks might actually take a moment to see what actually goes on there.............. :-) We can only hope.....
DuWayne
So once again you bash people for doing just what you do -- NOTHING.
What is happening though is that this is controversy is giving the anti christians ammuntion to bash God almighty, His Son and His church.I guess they're going to bash Christianity anyway but why hand them the club to do it with ? How many lost people out there will listen to these Christ haters calling Christians bigots, and being lost ,they dont know who to believe.....and so they remain lost . Can any Bible thumper out there see my point. Take a lesson from the apostle paul and use Halloween to tell people about the love and forgiveness that Jesus Christ offers.
Just a few thoughts to pass along.
Hope you and your family have a nice Halloween.
It was a pagan ritual from The Celtic ,but we added are belief. Halloween to us is October 31 and then next day Mass for November 1st.
Is like Christmas eve welcoming Christmas Day.Catholic embraces Halloween not as a evil day or night but a celebration for All Saint's Day..
I understand other view points ,I hope you understand Catholics view point as well.
the peasant would go knocking door to door for cakes or sweet to pray for the souls of those in still in limbo/purgatory,.Then the next day you would honor the saints and the other came reformation day.
Is all about Traditions ..Then the protestant church got stronger and outlaw Halloween as evil..
Catholic, believe in Purgatory and praying for their souls to make it to heaven.
Jack-o’-lanterns have a special place for Catholics on Halloween when we’re able to tell the story. The saints in their costumes remind us of the great heights we can reach. Skeletons, skulls and trick or treaters remind us of our own mortality and the need to pray for the dead. Jack stands in between as a one-man morality play.
The folktale of "Jack o’ the Lantern" arrived with early Irish Catholic colonists in Maryland. It quickly grew in popularity because of the independent spirit admired in this country. Jack has the cleverness to outwit the devil himself, but it isn’t enough to get him into heaven (see box below). He must roam forever between heaven and earth, holding his pumpkin lantern high. (Originally the lantern was cut from a turnip; after the story crossed the ocean, colonists changed it to the colorful vegetable they found here, the pumpkin.)
This was obviously NOT done for safety reasons! I think the teachers are behind this so the kids won't be all hyped up on sugar Monday morning! LMAO at all the FOOLS here in this county!
Many says is just Halloween and relax and not to make a big deal..
But to a Catholic ,Halloween has a rich long history and is not about the Devil or evil .Is totally different. And when it falls on Sunday,It makes it more special. The church does wonderful teaching for the children and they dress like Saints or bible heros.Pumpkin carving with the nuns as she tells the story of Jack..
I understand this is a small town and Catholic is a minority .We do not care to shove are faith down your throats. We care not if you celebrate Halloween or not. But,what ever reason there is to move Halloween. To us is different
To us Halloween is the lent before a ( All Saints Day) which is holy to us.Go to a city where Catholic mostly populate and November 1st is very holy day.October 31 st ,in the Catholic calendar is the start of Hallo Eves..
We where killed by the English church and branded as devil loving people for celebrating Halloween. Fast forward 2010 .And again we being told Halloween should not be celebrated on Sunday due to the lords day and school or safety. It was the Catholic who started Halloween it was Scottish and Irish that brought the tradition to America when they left the old world.I think we should be able to decided about are tradition..Halloween was born/created by The Catholic.Let us decided when or how to celebrate it..And The Vatican has not issue Halloween Being observed October 30...
London, England, Oct 14, 2010 / 12:43 am (CNA).- In an international effort to “reclaim” Halloween as a “joyful” Christian celebration, a founder of a U.K.-based Catholic community has asked Christians to place a light in their window on Oct. 31 as a sign of their faith.
I COPIED aND POSTED IT. Despite the potential controversy involved in such a decision, Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman asked parents in his town to stick to the traditional Oct. 31 date for trick-or-treating.
"We're doing it one day, on Sunday, because that's when Halloween is," Wirthman said. .
Just letting some parents know other counties will have Halloween normal nights in case you want to take the little ones treating,.
So, essentially all that Halloween is doing is having children (and adults who are young at heart) run around in costume, warding off bad spirits!
All honesty Saturday is really the Sabbath .The Catholic changed it to Sunday. Not God,men change Sabbath to Sunday.
And The Catholic decided to make a pagan Holiday to Christmas and Easter.
FOR SOME THINGS YOU GO WITH THE CATHOLICS FOR OTHERS YOU DO NOT..
very CONFUSING..
As far as the controversy... Its a little weird the south does this sort of thing to begin with, but my kids like getting to go 2 nights. I like the extra use of a $30 costume. So win-win.
I'm from Jersey. And in Jersey tonight would be Mischief night, where kids get to run around toilet papering each others yards, soaping up your neighbors car. The on Sunday (HALLOWEEN) it makes the town creepy and eerie looking from the TP the night before...
2-5 PM..NOT ALL OF BARROW COUNTY IS ANTI-FUN..
AUBURN IS HAVING A FUN HALLOWEEN ADVENT FROM 5:30 and 7:30 MOVIE OUTSIDE..
--------------------------------------------------
YMCA IN WINDER IS NOT ANT-FUN OR AFRAID OF HALLOWEEN
THEY HAVING TRICK -O-TREAT ON OCTOBER 31 ST FROM 2-5..
-----------------------------------------------PASS THE WORD TO OTHER FOLKS AND IF I FIND NEW UPDATES I WILL POST ,IF YOU FIND NEW ADVENTS PLEASE POST ..I WANT OUR CHILDREN IN BARROW TO ENJOY AND HAVE FUN..
Have a safe Halloween!!!!!
Nov 1 is All-hallows or All Saints Day
Nov 2 is All Souls Day...
My Catholic Digest says..Sorry Sheriff ,I do not own a Baptist Digest.
Happy Halloween to every one.Today and Tomorrow .
Good candies ..
City Of Auburn..All over Gwinnett they had Halloween events and Athens had the Wild Rumpus Parade.Auburn was brave enough and for the 1 st time did a Halloween event.A event that had no vendors trying to sell you things .It all came from them for us ..Plus,it proved that as much as Barrow County has issue with Halloween there is an equally amount that does like Halloween,..The Auburn event could have been much better. But,they really did try and it was just for the children ,and 1 st time that this county gets a Halloween event that has nothing to do with Church or Harvest Fest.It was Halloween with Princess,Super-Hero ,Ghost, zombies ,Witches you name it they where out ..And yummy treat.
Thank you for caring and trying.
I was not home for TOT..But,next door they told me no one pass by .So ,maybe it might be tonight..
They could have made life a little easier and left it alone..What gives them the right to change a date that been the same for hundreds and hundreds of year ? and Sheriff, keeps saying The Mayors and him thought it would be safe? But,why has not one Mayor step forward to take the heat??This just confuse every one.
But,.I understand other folks idea. And to be honest it has been a very confusing to parents.I played it safe and went to YMCA.Today.So my child enjoyed her TOT..
BTW we went to church in the morning...:)
OCTOBER 31...And guess what ..To Catholics it's something they celebrate before All ST.DAy..But I guess if you were a Catholic you would have known that...Must be a Baptist who thinks all other religion is wrong..
Again, Thanks for thinking of the community first
Didn't you have faith that us parents would make sure our kids will be in bed in time for school tomorrow?
Didn't you have faith that we can go to Church Sunday and still love the Lord and T or T with out forgetting the lord?
Didn't you have faith that we can decide what is best for my family regarding Halloween.
We put faith in you,That's why you was voted in return I feel you didn't give us enough faith.
Halloween was not the same this year.Children got robe over this wacky mis understanding..
So Thank you Jud Smith for changing it to Saturday night so I could have Sunday for Worship and to rest from the late night shenanigans of children turned loose by their parents.
(oh yeah I heard the Lord's name several times....IN VAIN, but that is ok, I prayed a special prayer for that child because they learn what is taught at home)
Funny Saturday I saw less cop/Sheriff.But Sunday they pass and roam all over..
WE NEEDED THEM SATURDAY ,Thats was when Jud Smith told us to do Halloween..#99.1 WAS SO RIGHT.THEY WERE OUT WAY TO LATE.BUT OH WELL NO SCHOOL NIGHT.
