Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, in conjunction with local mayors, police chiefs and county commissioners, is asking parents in Barrow County to observe Halloween trick-or-treating this year on Saturday, Oct. 30, instead of Oct. 31 when Halloween is traditionally celebrated.
“I have met with the mayors of all cities located inside Barrow County and their police chiefs and together, we all felt it would best if Halloween was observed on Oct. 30,” said Sheriff Smith.
Smith said public safety personnel will be out in force both nights.
“We want kids to enjoy the fun of trick-ortreating, but we want them to be safe,” Smith said. “This is why we are asking parents to recognize Halloween one day early, and take their kids trick-or-treating on Saturday instead of Sunday.”
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reminds parents and children to observe the following trick-or-treating safety tips:
•Carry a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility.
•Small children should always be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
•Older children should trick-or-treat in groups for greater safety.
•Never enter someone’s home without permission from parents.
•Do not eat any treats until a parent or responsible adult has inspected them.
•Walk only on sidewalks or the furthest edges of streets, against traffic flow.
•Cross streets only at intersections and not between parked cars.
•Approach only well-lit homes on a predetermined route.
•Attach reflective tape to treat bags for added visibility.
•Always walk, don’t run.
•Don’t cross through yards or alleys to get to the next house – use sidewalks.
•Make sure that masks are properly vented and do not obstruct visibility.
•Buy only flame retardant costumes or make a special homemade costume.
Go treat or treating whenever you like. Get it over it!
How do they expect to convey this to every one? You really think every one in Barrow reads this newspaper?? I would have never known about this if I wasn't surfing the net!
When government starts dictating your holidays is bad,bad news..No one asked the people what they wanted. They just decided.
Halloween is for Kids! Not government!
You puny kristians can stay home and look for satan in your brithces.
The rest of us good and true folk(you know who you are)will celebrate in true Heathen fashion.
Hail the gods!...Hail the ancestors!
And will the parents get a ticket if they ignore the Sheriff and Politician?
britches????
Just do whatever you want..You do anyway!!!!
Theres more important things to discuss than trick or treating.. How about elections in a few weeks??? Now thats worth your time and effort!
Just curious ...And with conjunctions ,which you spelled it wrong. We the people ,or like you say
"YOU" people. Are hurt that the Mayors and Sheriff and the big top leaders of Barrow did not talk or ask the parents ..
I'm a child of god and proud ,but I'm also born in America and raised here in a country the we can have Freedom of Speech! We not being rude we just practicing are rights as Americans.
What is best for the community is the we the people can voice are opinions ..The people wants Halloween like the calendar said 31 st..
All I want is to understand why Saturday is safer then Sunday? from what I heard Saturday is usually the night that all cops work because more crimes are done on Saturday..And more wrecks..
I guess I see you at church,
we people
but they can't say that, because they will be breaking the law of (Separation Of Church and State.)
I just wish they admit that is a religion issue instead of safety ...
just speak frankly.We not idiots.
Wake up People.
All I saw was grown -ups getting drunk and playing
with Fire-works..Why didn't the main head leaders of Barrow moved 4 th of JULY?
They say is Safety concerns? To move Halloween to Saturday. How about the safety concern with the drunks and fireworks on Sunday?
I just need to understand what safety issue they addressing..Is just small kids trick or treating for candies..Not getting drunk...
I do not understand why they say is a safety issue,I think is a religion reason.
Still church is in the morning ,Halloween is at the evening.Instead of making parents angry, just let things flow as it should be.
Could you find out specifically why Saturday is considered safer than Sunday, since that's the reason being given for their suggesion.
Thanks
