Winder Mayor Chip Thompson and his staff may have found a way to “take the sting out” of the proposed storm water fee that has become controversial in recent months.
But the long-term solution could spread the pain — both financial and political — around.
On Monday, Thompson told the council that the city could obtain some of the money to pay for storm water services for the next couple of years by refinancing three outstanding loans.
He said that preliminary numbers show the savings could be as much as $600,000.
“You said go out and find some money, so that is basically what we’re trying to do,” the mayor said.
Property tax could be an option instead

Property tax could be an option instead??? Dont the HOMEOWNERS have enough on them already? Rise in millage (property tax & advalorum tax, gasoline taxs, loss of jobs, increase in utilities, increased true cost of living and school taxes, falling home values??? I suggest you see federal funding, state funding, donations or even a cake sale!!! Perhaps a reduction in salary or benefits of city/county workers??? Oh, no, lets not ask them to take a hit! Well, the rest of us have taken that hit already. How about the county commissioners or the city council who say they love our town so much work the rest of the year for free??? There you go, Mr. Mayor. There are other places to look for money besides from those of us just trying to keep our homes. Stay OUT of our pockets.

So tell me what other city has no property tax. Why don't you find another city to move to. Winder's lucky to have not had to pay property taxes before now. And why don't YOU work for free for once.

Because I am the one having to work to pay for the mismanagement of the current infrastructure that I have been subsiding for the last 55 years. You ask what other city has no property tax? None that I know of, but Winder has now, and for the last 55 years has had property taxes. It is with the influx of 'passers through', transients (renters), heavy trucks and tax loop holes afforded to businesses that has kept Winder out of step with the need for upgrades. How about YOU running for office and fix these problems since you know so much and show us all hot to magically fix these oversights without burdening the hard working homeowners? Why should this be put on the homeowners for the use of the transients and the passers through. This is like someone using your front yard as a cut through, leaving you with a trail to maintain across your private property? Some folks build a fence so that those will "go around" or they charge the passers through a toll for pay for the maintenance. Now that I have educated you on how and why, what do you suggest next? Please feel free to do so at the next city council meeting (provided it is not behind closed doors). I would be more than happy to entertain your suggestions. Please bring visual aids to show our leaders as they sure don't have a clear picture of what they are doing.

Smaller govt. Means less taxes, if this community wants to survive the current economic crisis, cut the budget more, more taxes aren't the answer, and not all cities have a monopoly on a gas department that is very profitable, not only that they just almost doubled commercial water rates, no more increases, taxes or anything else that comes out of property owners, the county is going to have a hard enough time getting taxes paid on time this year as it is, everyones savings are gone, and if the economy doesn't get better around Winder it is going to turn into a ghost town, more taxes is not the answer, I don't think people understand what is going to happen with the local economy now that C&S Bank has taken over the Peoples Bank, local property values are going to plummet even worse once they start liquidating the properties that were forclosed on or going to be forclosed on, the local govt needs to think about what is ahead of us and try to cut budgets more to keep from raising taxes, hey the barrow county school board cut 8 million from their budget, they didn't raise taxes, leaders need to get serious about what's ahead.
