Barrow County Emergency Services reminds citizens that the annual outdoor burning ban issued by the Environmental Protection Agency expired last Friday, Oct. 1 Citizens will be allowed to burn yard debris in accordance with regulations and upon acquisition of a burn permit from the Georgia Department of Forestry. Burn permits can be obtained through the Georgia Forestry website at www.Georgiatrees.org or by calling 1-877-652-2876. After obtaining a permit, citizens should call Barrow County Emergency Services at 770-307-3122 and provide their address and permit number.
Natural vegetation such as hand piled leaves and tree limbs may be burned outdoors. Piles must be 6’x6’ or smaller. It is unlawful to burn any man made products such as tires, shingles, plastic and lumber.
Barrow County Emergency Services public information officer Lt. Scott Dakin urges citizens to use caution when burning due to ongoing dry conditions.
Dakin advised keeping water and shovels readily accessible while burning yard debris. Dakin also warned against using gasoline or other flammable liquids to ignite fires.
“We want to urge citizens to use caution whenever they are burning outdoors,” Dakin said. “We also urge citizens to take their neighbors into consideration when burning.”
