Man sentenced in Barrow County stabbing death

A Colbert man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for the stabbing death of Oscar Armando Lopez Melandez, 51, earlier this year.

Melandez, of Athens, was found dead in a drainage ditch off Booth Road in Statham on March 12. The following morning, authorities charged Adalberto Sanchez, 53, with felony murder, possession of a firearm or knife while trying to commit a crime and aggravated assault.

Authorities believe Sanchez and Melandez were arguing inside Sanchez’s vehicle when the confrontation turned deadly. Sanchez was on parole from Florida for first degree murder at the time of his arrest. He had been sentenced to 15 years probation after being charged with attempted murder in 2000. Prior to his arrest for Melandez’s murder, Sanchez had been residing in Georgia for an undisclosed length of time under the supervision of authorities.

On Sept. 24, Superior Court judge Currie Mingledorff sentenced Sanchez to serve ten years in prison and another 15 years on probation on charges of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

So this guy was already a convicted murderer from Florida for first degree murder, tried to murder someone again in Florida in 2000, comes up here and kills AGAIN and our DA DROPS THE MURDER charge and pleads him down to 10 years??????

This is the same DA who dropped the death penalty on the Jackson County mass murderer who stabbed his girlfriend and mother to death and then burned his two kids up setting the house on fire to cover up the first two murders...

Now this???????

Ok, so a guy who killed someone 15yrs ago is let loose, then kills again and now in 10yrs he can do it again ? Really Barrow County Judges, you wonder why things happen here

What a screwed up system we have here in Barrow County. I read this paper every week and I am so shocked at some of the people who are guilty of crimes and the amount of time or shall I say probation they get. It's ridiculous!

The article is mistaken. The defendant was not on parole for Murder in Florida. He had been sentenced to probation for attempted murder in Florida where he only got probation. Obviously there was an issue in that case. In this case, the evidence was that the victim was intoxicated and started the confrontation with Mr. Sanchez. There were serious self defense issues in this case.

OH, our bad, only Attempted Murder and obviously he still hangs out with people who he kills or try's to ! , my bad, thought he was an outstanding citizen and seems like you have more inside info that the public does not have access to, hum....someone defending their job and lack of cojones to prosecute !. Dont matter, you'll be voted out next election !
