A 13-year-old Auburn child is dead after being struck by a vehicle Friday evening.
Dakota Wilson of Auburn was crossing Braselton Highway near the Duncan Creek skate park in Dacula at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 17 when he was struck by a Chevrolet Suburban driven by 23-year-old Kevin Sanders of Cumming.
The accident occurred on a busy five lane section of Braselton Hwy. near Hamilton Mill subdivision in Dacula. Though no pedestrian crossing exists at the intersection, visitors to the skate park frequently cross the road to patronize a convenience store located at the corner of Jim Moore Road and Braselton Highway. The nearest pedestrian crosswalk is approximately one block north of the accident scene at the intersection of Braselton Hwy. and Pine Road.
Wilson was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The Gwinnett County Police Department Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) responded to the scene. GCPD spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Roberts said the accident remains under investigation, but drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
We live near this park on Jim Moore road. We have called, written letters to the state and to the county asking for a light or a crosswalk at this intersection. We see kids on a daily basis make this dangerous cross. Their response was that not enough accidents have occurred here to warrant a light. We'll this is the second fatality here in less than a year.
Today we saw kids crossing even with the memorial flowers there reminding us that this intersection is deadly.
We will be on the phone again on monday and writing letters demanding that for the safety of kids they need a crosswalk or a light here.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this child.
