Another anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy reminds me of how America continues to be the strongest country in the world.
It’s so gratifying to see — for even just a day — fellow Americans stand together as one. It’s something we need far more of.
As great as our country is and as strong as it is, there are a few things I believe will make it even better. Even the best can stand some room for improvement from time to time.
With that in mind, I’d like to see:
•More cooperation between the two major political parties in our country. This “I’m against it because you are for it” is getting our country no where. We are in the midst of the worst economic times, many experts believe, in our country with the exception of the Great Depression. Nothing is going to change until we learn to work together and — heaven forbid — compromise on a few issues here and there.
•More assistance for our servicemen and servicewomen once they return home. Just because their job is finished doesn’t mean ours should be in terms of helping them with whatever issue they may face. Veterans issues are probably the area I don’t mind paying taxes for. They have earned the right to receive whatever help and support they need. Whether it’s illness or dealing with the stress that comes with a job I can’t even begin to imagine, we owe it to veterans to be there as a country for them. Just because their tour — or tours — of duty is over does not mean our responsibility as a country is over to them. Everyone likes to talk about supporting veterans, but as a country we are not doing enough. In fact, I doubt we ever could, but we should be doing more.
•I’ve mentioned this before but it certainly bares repeating. If you are going to fly an American flag at your home or business, don’t allow it to become a shredded mess. Show the proper respect for our flag. If it’s raining, don’t put it out. If it has become torn, put up a new one.
•More tolerance of people who are of different cultures and religions than our own. I’ve grown weary of the constant rhetoric against Muslims (are all white men condemned because of what Timothy McVeigh did?). And for crying out loud, when did America no longer stand for the land of opportunity? A certain group of politicians have made it their past time (and ticket to elected office) to condemn those who come into our country. Are some of those who come here criminals? Yes, but even more who already live here are also on the wrong side of the law. Most simply want a better life for themselves and their families. If you go back, that’s why all of our ancestors initially came here. You do realize that unless you are Native American, you are also descended from immigrants as well.
•Enough already with the fear mongering about the so-called Mosque in New York City. America, at least the way I view it, is stronger than any building. We were NOT defeated on Sept. 11, 2001 so the building is not a symbol of America being conquered. It all goes back to tolerance of others. Everyone has the right to worship as he or she chooses. That’s what makes America stand head and shoulders above all others. We allow — or at least we should — all points of view be it religious or otherwise.
•Finally, how about a little research before we believe something we hear on television or on a so-called unbiased news channel? Don’t be so quick to believe everything you hear — from me or anyone else. Read, read and then read some more. You might be surprised by what you learn.

"More Tolerance"? AMERICANS have not flown A/C into a buildings in their country adn MURDERED theri citizens have we? How LAME is your Tim McVeigh comparson, AMERICANS PUT HIM TO DEATH! YOu know the hsitory of ELLIS Island Correct? Millions of "our ancestors" LEGALLY came into this countru and made us better, learned ENGLISH, made their OWN way with out benifits from teh government. THey simple fact that they come here outside OUR LAWS makes them CRIMINAL! If they want to come here, do it LEGALLY, learn ENGLISH, assimilate, DO NOT hyphnate your "Americanism"
Charlie
As for "tolerance"...think about what that word means for a moment and you'll realize what you are saying. You tolerate a dog barking at 1 a.m., you tolerate the neighbors next door blaring their music too loud, you tolerate that smell coming from your teenage son's room...so think about what it means to TOLERATE illigal aliens and muslims.
And lastly, you don't take your respect of the American serviceman far enough. In my opinion, anyone who actually sees combat in order to protect the rights and interests of this great country should be tax exempt for the rest of their lives. They should have free (good) medical care the rest of their lives. These are no conscripts or draftees. These are men, and nowadays even women, who VOLUNTEER to do what the rest of us wimps are afraid to do.
Anyway, that's my feelings on your subject.
I, and many others, have no problem with people coming to this country to better themselves ~ as you said, this country was built on immigration. But the people who sneak into this country break the law in doing so, they fail to assimilate, they fail to learn the language, they take advantage of the fact that "anchor babies" are automatic citizens (we need to do away with that rule immediately!), they flood our emergency rooms with no way to make payment (thus forcing the taxpayers to pick up the tab), they take from the welfare system they are not entitled to, etc. All we ask is that they get in line and come into this country legally, learn the language, be self-sufficient, not take welfare or abuse the system, and be proud to be Americans! I don't want to see them in rallies flying their country's flag, extolling the virtues of their country (why the hell are they even here then if their country is so darn great?) and basically spitting on this country that provides them with all these opportunities!
And if I hear one more person "whining" about the awful way we treat illegal aliens ("undocumented workers")....grrrrr! Perhaps we should look at how Mexico treats illegal aliens.
"Consider: Open-borders protesters marched freely at the Capitol building in Arizona, comparing GOP Gov. Jan Brewer to Hitler, waving Mexican flags, advocating that demonstrators "Smash the State," and holding signs that proclaimed "No human is illegal" and "We have rights."
But under the Mexican constitution, such political speech by foreigners is banned. Noncitizens cannot "in any way participate in the political affairs of the country." In fact, a plethora of Mexican statutes enacted by its congress limit the participation of foreign nationals and companies in everything from investment, education, mining and civil aviation to electric energy and firearms. Foreigners have severely limited private property and employment rights (if any).
As for abuse, the Mexican government is notorious for its abuse of Central American illegal aliens who attempt to violate Mexico's southern border. The Red Cross has protested rampant Mexican police corruption, intimidation and bribery schemes targeting illegal aliens there for years. Mexico didn't respond by granting mass amnesty to illegal aliens, as it is demanding that we do. It clamped down on its borders even further. In late 2008, the Mexican government launched an aggressive deportation plan to curtain illegal Cuban immigration and human trafficking through Cancun."

Perhaps our country would be wise to adopt and enforce the same laws as Mexico ~ Mexico's Ley General de Poblacion (General Law of the Population). It provides:
Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society:
* Foreigners are admitted into Mexico "according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress." (Article 32)
* Immigration officials must "ensure" that "immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance" and for their dependents. (Article 34)
* Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets "the equilibrium of the national demographics," when foreigners are deemed detrimental to "economic or national interests," when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican laws, and when "they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy." (Article 37)
* The Secretary of Governance may "suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest." (Article 38)
Mexican authorities must keep track of every single person in the country:
* Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request, i.e., to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants. (Article 73)
* A National Population Registry keeps track of "every single individual who comprises the population of the country," and verifies each individual's identity. (Articles 85 and 86)
* A national Catalog of Foreigners tracks foreign tourists and immigrants (Article 87), and assigns each individual with a unique tracking number (Article 91).
Foreigners with fake papers, or who enter the country under false pretenses, may be imprisoned:
* Foreigners with fake immigration papers may be fined or imprisoned. (Article 116)
* Foreigners who sign government documents "with a signature that is false or different from that which he normally uses" are subject to fine and imprisonment. (Article 116)
Foreigners who fail to obey the rules will be fined, deported, and/or imprisoned as felons:
* Foreigners who fail to obey a deportation order are to be punished. (Article 117)
* Foreigners who are deported from Mexico and attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. (Article 118)
* Foreigners who violate the terms of their visa may be sentenced to up to six years in prison (Articles 119, 120 and 121). Foreigners who misrepresent the terms of their visa while in Mexico -- such as working with out a permit -- can also be imprisoned.
Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The General Law on Population says,
* "A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally." (Article 123)
* Foreigners with legal immigration problems may be deported from Mexico instead of being imprisoned. (Article 125)
* Foreigners who "attempt against national sovereignty or security" will be deported. (Article 126)
Mexicans who help illegal aliens enter the country are themselves considered criminals under the law:
* A Mexican who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to up to five years in prison. (Article 127)
* Shipping and airline companies that bring undocumented foreigners into Mexico will be fined. (Article 132)
All of the above runs contrary to what Mexican leaders are demanding of the United States. The stark contrast between Mexico's immigration practices versus its American immigration preachings is telling. It gives a clear picture of the Mexican government's agenda: to have a one-way immigration relationship with the United States.
