More than a year and a dozen accidents later, a left turn lane from Hwy. 211 onto Barrow Park Drive has been approved.
Last month, county engineer Darrell Greeson presented plans for the turn lane at a county commission meeting. Greeson estimated the project, once approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), could be completed for no more than $130,000.
GDOT has now signed off on the project.
The turn lane approval comes after several attempts to have GDOT address the dangerous intersection. Greeson previously advised commissioners that the state agency would not lower the 55 mph speed limit on Hwy. 211. GDOT officials did agree however to install signs along Hwy. 211 warning motorists to watch for vehicles turning left. The signs were erected in early August.
Now that GDOT has signed the permit, work on the turn lane should begin this week said Barrow County commission chairman Danny Yearwood.
Yearwood said all project work except for paving will be completed by county employees. He hopes construction will be finished within two months.
Once completed, the road will be widened by 14’ and include a 200-foot turn lane.

There are rules and then there are rules. Just depends on which side of the fence you fall on as to which rules you have to follow.
