9-11 TRIBUTE
This Saturday, the Winder Fire Department will honor those who died during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center during their annual Remembrance Day service.
In 107 minutes, 405 firefighters and law enforcement officers lost their lives as they worked to rescue civilian victims of the attack.
Each year, the Winder Fire Department pays homage to these public safety personnel with a two hour long service which marks milestones of the tragic events of 9-11.
At 8:48 a.m., a siren will sound to indicate the time at which American Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center killing all 92 passengers on board. The siren will sound again at 9:06 a.m. in remembrance of the moment United Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. All 65 passengers were killed.
At 9:43 a.m., a siren will mark the time American Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. All 64 people on board the plane were killed as were another 125 people inside the Pentagon.
At 9:55 a.m., the station bell will be rung at the same time the South Tower collapsed nine years ago.
A siren will also sound at 10:10 a.m., the time at which United Flight 93 crashed into a Pennsylvania field killing all 40 passengers on board.
United Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked planes which did not reach its intended target due to the heroic actions of passengers and crews in fighting the terrorists. The station bell will also be rung at 10:29 a.m. in remembrance of the moment the North Tower collapsed.
The ceremony will conclude as the honor guard lowers the flag to half staff.
In total, 2,976 victims were killed by 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists during the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor.
The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 11 at the Winder Fire Department located at 90 North Broad Street in Winder.
