Man assaulted, pistol whipped outside Walmart

The victim said he had just exited the store when he was approached by Nicholas Alexander Atkinson, 18, of 390 West Oak Street in Winder, and another male. The victim said Atkinson and his companion asked for cigarettes. The victim said no. The two males then asked the victim for a ride – a request he also declined.

As he continued towards his vehicle, the victim heard the males say something he could not understand. When he asked what they said, the males reportedly began swearing at him. Atkinson then allegedly rushed the victim causing the man to fall to the ground.

According to the victim, Atkinson “jumped” on him and began striking him. During the assault, the victim’s gun fell out of its holster. Atkinson reportedly grabbed the gun and struck the victim on the back of the head. The victim said Atkinson also hit him in the left eye with the gun before running away with the weapon.

The victim had a cut on the back of his head and his left eye was noticeably bruised. He was transported to Barrow Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Atkinson was later arrested and charged with theft by taking, battery, armed robbery, possession of a firearm while trying to commit crimes, battery and public drunkenness.
