A man shot a neighbor’s dog multiple times after the canine reportedly charged at him.
A deputy was dispatched to a Justin Drive address last week after a man called the Sheriff’s Office to advise he had shot the dog.
The man said the canine charged him when he exited his vehicle. Feeling threatened, the man shot the dog because it was growling and barking at him. According to the man, the dog had charged him in the past forcing him to defend himself with tools and other items.
When the deputy arrived, he found the dog suffering from three gunshots wounds. The man admitted shooting the dog with his .22 caliber revolver. The dog had blood coming from its mouth and chest, but was still alive.
Animal control was notified and photographed the scene. The owner of the dog loaded the canine into the animal control truck to be transported for medical attention.
Barrow County Animal Control Director Jimmy Terrell said the canine was paralyzed as a result of the shooting and had to be euthanized.
An Animal Control officer cited the owner of the dog for allowing the animal to run at large. The shooter was issued a citation for cruelty to animals.
Both parties have a court date of Sept. 14.
1. IF he FELT threatened, all he had to do was get back into the vehicle!
2. IF he HAD TIME to get his gun out, then he HAD TIME to get back in his vehicle!
3. IF he TRULY felt threatened, then one shot in the general direction of the animal should have done the trick.
I applaud the sheriff's office for taking this serious and charging the man.
I had a neighbor who shot a dog because he "claimed" to feel threatened by the dog. YET, he had time to go back into the house, get his gun, come back out and shot the dog.
That's not protecting yourself -- that's animal cruelty.
