Winder man killed in motorcycle accident

A Winder man was killed Saturday morning in a motorcycle accident on Winder Highway in Dacula.

Gwinnett County Police have identified the motorcyclist as 59-year-old Roger Shimmin of Winder.

Shimmin was westbound on Winder Highway near Franklin Drive when he was struck by an eastbound Suburu Forrester driven by Stephen Franklin Ventress, 22, of 251 Christy Lane in Auburn. Ventress reportedly crossed the double yellow centerline while navigating a curve and collided with Shimmin’s motorcycle in the westbound lane.

Shimmin was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

Ventress was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle in addition to charges of failure to maintain lane and driving on the wrong side of the roadway.

He was released Wednesday on a $11,600 bond.

This is a dangerous road. It needs a turn lane right there. It also needs a traffic light at the very spot, wherever it is, that the death happened. The road needs to be closed until it can be made 100% safe for 100% of the drivers, no matter how careless & stupid they drive. Cars, roads and drivers do not mix. This a proven fact. I pray to the lord every night for more turn lanes.

If you don't know where the accident happened - how do you know it's dangerous and needs a light?

I'm sorry this person lost their life; I'm sure he was a father, husband, son and will be missed.

Just another example of a driver who is too busy doing anything they need to be doing but driving! I hope this person is behind bars and stays there for taking anothers life. When are we,as americans going to hold others accountable for their actions no matter what!!

My husband worked with this man. He was a husband, father and grandfather. He was a wonderful person and will be missed very much.The worst part of this ordeal is that my husband's older brother was also killed in a motorcycle accident.
