Husband wrecks car, claims to have killed dog
A domestic dispute took an ugly turn after a man threatened to commit his wife to a mental institution.
The woman said she and her assistant were shopping at the Mall of Georgia when her husband, Duett Cedron Parrish, 46, of 35 West Midland Avenue in Winder, called several times demanding to know when she would return home. Parrish reportedly instructed the assistant to bring his wife home “this instant” and that he intended to have his wife committed that weekend if she was not home by a specified time.
The assistant relayed this information to the wife who was “shocked,” according to the arrest report. The assistant also said the wife had spoken to an attorney regarding a divorce from Parrish due to past physical and verbal domestic disputes.
When the wife and her assistant arrived back in Winder, the wife said she did not want to go to the house if Parrish was present. The two women stopped at a nearby gas station. The assistant called a friend who agreed to let the women know as soon as Parrish left.
Once Parrish left the house, the wife and her assistant went to the home so that the wife could get some clothes and her dogs. The two women pulled the car around to the back of the house and the wife began to collect the dogs. She was able to get one of the dogs, “Mason,” in the car before Parrish returned.
When the women realized Parrish was coming back to the house, they got in the car and fled back to the gas station.
According to the assistant, Parrish and his wife then had a phone conversation in which Parrish said he had wrecked his vehicle and killed one of their dogs.
The wife, who was very distraught, called the Sheriff’s Office and returned to the home. The assistant remained in the car with the dog until deputies arrived.
Parrish also called 911 to report a possible burglary attempt. Parrish claimed he saw two women running from the rear of his residence and thought they were breaking into his home.
When the deputy arrived, the wife was standing next to the assistant’s car. While one deputy interviewed her, another interviewed Parrish. Parrish claimed he had just returned home when he saw two women running from the rear of the house. Parrish said he sped up the driveway and around a fallen tree branch in an attempt to catch the women. In the process, he crashed the truck. Parrish claimed one of his wife’s dogs had been thrown through the rear window of the truck and ended up underneath the vehicle.
The deputy discovered the truck resting on its side. Skid marks in the gravel indicated Parrish had been driving at a high rate of speed. The truck had a cracked front windshield, broken side window, broken rear window and dents and scratches along the entire driver’s side of the vehicle. The deputy did not locate any sign of an injured animal.
Parrish said once he realized who the two women were, he went inside the house and started drinking scotch.
While gathering information for the report, one of the deputies saw Parrish take the dog Mason out of the assistant’s vehicle and began walking back towards the residence.
The deputy called out for Parrish to stop. Parrish ignored him. The deputy advised Parrish that the vehicle did not belong to him and asked if he had permission to take anything out of the vehicle, Parrish continued walking towards the residence.
When Parrish continued to ignore the deputy’s warning to stop, the deputy drew his taser. After placing the dog inside the house and closing the door, Parrish finally complied with the deputy’s instructions.
Parrish was placed under arrest and charged with obstruction, entering auto and theft by taking.
Both the wife and the assistant said they were frightened of Parrish and feared what he might do upon his release from jail. Both were given information on how to obtain a protective order.
After Parrish was transported to the jail, the dog that Parrish claimed to have killed was located inside the house in a locked bedroom.
