Patrons at the American Legion 509 got more entertainment than they bargained for when a police pursuit disrupted an August 11 gathering.
An officer on patrol in the area saw Timothy Maurice Mayweather, 47, of 120 Ashwood Drive in Winder walking outside the American Legion post. The officer knew Mayweather was wanted for a felony probation violation, but did not immediately approach him because he knew Mayweather had fled from officers during previous encounters.
Once backup arrived, one of the officers went inside the American Legion and saw Mayweather walk out of the bathroom. The officer ordered Mayweather to put his hands behind his back, but Mayweather failed to comply.
The officer grabbed Mayweather by his arm and placed him in an arm bar up against the wall. Before the officer could secure Mayweather in handcuffs, Mayweather freed his arm, pushed the officer in the chest and ran away.
The officer repeatedly yelled for Mayweather to stop running, but Mayweather refused.
“I chased Mr. Mayweather around the inside of the 509 in a circle and grabbed him,” the officer wrote in the arrest report. “But again he pushed me with both hands in a violent manner hard, which made me stumble backwards.”
The officer noted that the patrons of the 509 appeared “frightened” due to the fact that Mayweather pushed several people to the ground in his attempt to escape.
Mayweather made it to a side door and was attempting to leave the building when the officer deployed his taser. Mayweather was able to break a lead to one of the taser prongs and began running again.
The officer pursued Mayweather down Tuggle Street. Eventually, the officer was able to tackle Mayweather to the ground. Mayweather attempted to throw the officer off his back causing the officer to hit his forehead on a rock.
Other officers arrived and helped secure Mayweather in handcuffs.
After Mayweather was handcuffed, the officer asked if he had any weapons. Mayweather said no, but officers subsequently located five knives on his person.
Mayweather was served with the felony probation violation warrant and also charged with felony obstruction and disorderly conduct.
