Barrow County Emergency Services is warning citizens not to fall victim to a phone scam soliciting donations on behalf of the department.
“We want citizens to know that we do not solicit donations by phone for anything this department is involved in,” said Barrow County Emergency Services public information officer Lt. Scott Dakin.
Department personnel learned of the scam when a citizen called to complain. According to Dakin, the citizen was contacted by someone posing as an employee of the department. The caller requested a cash donation which he said would assist citizens who could not afford departmental services.
“This department will never withhold any of our services from anyone, no matter what their financial state,” Dakin said.
The call originated from a 205 area code which covers the region surrounding Birmingham, Ala.
The information has been forwarded to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
Dakin advised citizens to be wary of any calls soliciting donations on behalf of the department.
“If you receive any telephone calls by anyone that identifies themselves as a member of our department, and requesting donations, do not give them any donations. This money will not be going to this department,” Dakin said.
