Barrow County Emergency Services personnel responded to 190 calls from July 30 through August 5 – up from 113 the previous week.
The calls included numerous storm related calls as well as several vehicle accidents.
During the week, firefighters and EMTs responded to the following:
•structure fire on Jefferson Road. Engines 1 and 6, Med 1 and 6 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to a July 31 structure fire. Firefighters discovered heavy involvement in the kitchen and attic. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and performed salvage and overhaul.
•vehicle fire on Matthew School Road. On July 31, Engine 7 responded to a fire in a Ford F-350 flat bed with heavy involvement in the cab and engine compartments.
•lightning strike on Commons Park. Crews from Engine 3, Ladder 7, Med 3 and Battalion 1 discovered damage to a home but no fire after the residence was struck by lightning on July 31.
•lightning strike on Brandon Drive. A home was struck by lightning on July 31. Engine and 6, Med 1, Battalion 1 and Winder Engine 1 found fire in the attic of the home.
•overturned vehicle on Bankhead Highway. On August 1, Engine 4 responded to a report of an overturned vehicle. Crews found a truck that had flipped several times. There were no injuries from the accident.
•single car accident on Carl Bethlehem Road. Ladder 7 and Med 7 responded to Highway 316 near Carl Bethlehem Road for a single car accident on August 1. Crews found a vehicle in the median that had lost control in the rain. The car had damage to the front and rear of the vehicle. There were no injuries.
•gas leak on Finnigan Drive. On August 1, Truck 7 and Med 7 responded to a reported gas leak. The residents advised they heard lightning hit and then heard a pop in the house. Shortly afterwards, they smelled gas in the home. Crews shut off gas to residence and notified the Winder Gas Department.
•motor vehicle collision on Hwy. 316. Engine 1, Med 3 and Battalion 1 responded to Highway 316 and Craft Road after a 911 caller reported an overturned vehicle. When crews arrived, they found a vehicle off the roadway. The driver advised the vehicle had hydroplaned, but had not overturned. There were no injuries.
•motor vehicle collision at Pleasant Hill Church Road and Browns Road. Engine 1, Med 6 and Battalion 1were dispatched. When crews arrived, there were no vehicles present. A 911 caller advised that the accident victim had driven to 336 Pleasant Hill Church Road. One patient was transported to an area hospital.
•motor vehicle collision on Atlanta Highway. On August 3, Engine 4, Med 4 and Battalion 1 responded to a two vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.
