The polls are now closed for the August 10 runoff election.
Locally, Republican voters were asked to decide between Shane Coley and Frank Ginn in the State Senate 47 race and between Jody Hice and Rob Woodall for the 7th U.S. Congressional District.
Statewide, voters chose today between Republicans Nathan Deal and Karen Handel for the gubernatorial nomination. The winner will face Roy Barnes in November.
Other statewide Republican races on the runoff ballot included the Attorney General’s race between Sam Olens and Preston Smith as well as the race for insurance commissioner in which voters had the opportunity to choose Maria Sheffield or Ralph Hudgens.
The district 2 Public Safety Commissioner race between Tim Echols and John Douglas was also on the Republican ballot.
Democratic voters had one statewide race contested in today's runoff. Gail Buckner and Georganna Sinkfield are vying for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.
Check back throughout the evening as Barrow County election results are posted.

I'm no Hice supporter, but he's a good man. That Jody "did right well in Barrow County" is a reflection of his work here, and the familiarity this county has with him. By the evidence of the vote today, more people voted for Woodall, on a percentage basis, than in the primary, here in Barrow County.
Maybe you're just an idiot. Or maybe just a Methodist. Either way, take a deep breath.
McCain, Deal and Hice. And, you know, buddy boy, it's not up to you to decide if any opinion is "valid." What you mean is: YOU don't agree with it. Too bad, ace, take your meds and go to bed.
It is such a shame that people do not get out and vote. How easy can it be. Early vote, absentee or on election day. How can we become a better nation when people are just too lazy to vote. Don't complain about your economic woes if you didn't vote.
Why should I go vote? This is the way it is, this is the way it has always been, this is the way it will always be.
Even if I vote and elect someone new, nothing changes. They promise change but nothing happens, everything stays the same or get worse.
Certainly, we can cause change if we're able to motivate enough people to move with us toward a goal.
The problem is that it's hard to do that. It takes considerable money and influence to get a sufficient number of people moving to make change. The people who most need it tend to lack the time, money, and/or skills to do it.
Expecting an average Joe or Jane with no substantial public speaking practice or money raising skills to stand up against professional politicians is just not practical. It's a nice story to watch on TV, but it doesn't happen in reality (with the rare exception).
So unless some very charismatic person pops up who is able to motivate both people and pocketbook, an individual is not likely to cause change.
That person often reflects the status quo, and there's rarely a candidate representing the opposition view, so people stay home.
So the perception that change is impossible is not just maintained, but reinforced in every election.
There are ways to go about it--there are public forums right here in Barrow where an average person can practice advocating for their position with minimal risk, and no money, but that takes time and motivation. Our system has been broken for a long time, and social inertia is hard to break.
Sincerely,

Red Ryder,
Help me understand.
I quoted Frank Ginn's own words and positions, which you call an attack. How is repeating his words an attack?
Frank Ginn knowingly deceived voters about my position on illegal immigration. Even with the error in the news article, this is easily seen by simply reading all three sentences from the same article that he uses as a basis for his mailer. How is that not an attack?
You are making claims. Can you support those claims? I curiously await your response.
By the way, what is your real name?
Shane
I believe your campaign flyer is rather deceptive, when, in discussing the immigration issue, you frame it by quoting the Barrow journal as saying "Ginn never answered yes or no." Is that an attack by ambiguity? I thought it was. And I understood that he was in support of an Arizona type immigration posititon. Is that incorrect? If so, I will stand corrected.
I was there and know that Mr. Ginn did not give a yes or no answer.
If he had not made such a big deal out of the immigration issue, then this response would have been of little interest in the campaign. But since he has made such extreme (false) claims about the difference between himself and the other candidates on the issue, his unclear response becomes important.
A person who *markets himself* as being so tough on illegal immigration should have given an unmistakable YES response.
Here are more details.

In addition, Mr. Ginn is heavily supported by GMA and city and county officials. GMA and ACCG both use the *name* and *money* of taxpayers to lobby *against* taxpayers. Three particularly egregious areas are illegal immigration, property tax relief and eminent domain.
Take some time to research the legislative history of HB 1164: Revisions to Georgia's Security/Immigration Compliance Act by Rick Austin (R- Demorest). Or HB 1259 or SB 460.
These organizations (GMA & ACCG) lobbied successfully to water down the language of HB 1164. Legislative leadership kept the bills from coming out of committee. One of the associate members of ACCG is a construction company who was caught using illegal immigrant labor to build a county facility in metro Atlanta.
So my question is this: How does a candidate get support on the platform of being tough on illegal immigration when the organizations who are backing him work in our legislature, using our name and money, to take the teeth out of illegal immigration reform law?
And if our city and county officials are opposed to this behavior, why do they not pull our city and county memberships and demand accountability from these deceptive organizations on behalf of the citizens they are elected to represent?
By the way, what is your real name?
Shane

As for the mudslingers(ANONYMOUS, TOMMY JEFFERSON, RED RYDER, TEE JAY AND GANG GREEN)maybe you all need to get on your knees and ask GOD for giveness and get GOD WORD (BIBLE)and read it. You will stand for the Lord in judgement and give in account for what you do,and say about others, that is FACT. Each one of you are in my prayers.
