The Winder Noon Lions Club recently honored several public safety officers for their service to the community. The awards were presented at the July 28 meeting of the club.
DEPUTY OF THE YEAR
Barrow County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chris Jackson was honored as the Winder Noon Lions Club Deputy of the Year.
Jackson, a five year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, thanked Sheriff Jud Smith and Lion’s Club members for the award saying “this is the only award I have received in my career and I am very honored.”
Jackson began his career as a detention officer at the Barrow County jail. Two years later, he transferred to the patrol division.
“Deputy Jackson has made quite an impact in Barrow County law enforcement in his three years on the road,” Sheriff Smith said during the ceremony. “His cases and reports are of the highest quality, which speaks well of his dedication to seeing all of his cases through to the very end.”
Members of the Sheriff’s Office Command Staff nominated Jackson for the award in part for his role in the creation and implementation of the department’s domestic violence unit (V.I.P.E.R.), Smith said.
“He has made it his mission to help end the scourge of domestic violence in Barrow County, to help empower the victims of domestic violence to continue living their lives without fear,” Smith added.
Jackson was also recognized for his professionalism and fairness while on the job.
“All of us here at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office are very proud and honored to have such a fine man among our ranks,” said Sheriff Smith following the ceremony. “He is very deserving of this award.”
WINDER POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR
Officer Nick Bilik began his career at the Winder Police Department as a communications officer in 2005.
The following year, Bilik trained as a detention officer and began working in that role while still filling in as a communications officer. Later in 2006, Bilik began working as an undercover officer for the department at Winder Barrow High School – a role he continued until April of 2007.
In October of 2008, Bilik graduated from the Northeast Georgia Police Academy. Since then, Bilik has worked as a patrol officer and is currently a field training officer for new recruits.
WINDER FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR
Winder firefighter Brandon McIntyre was described as the “salt of the earth” when presented with this year’s firefighter of the year award.
Every day, McIntyre quietly goes about the job of protecting this city and providing for his family, according to a Lions Club news release.
McIntyre began his career with the Winder Fire Department in 2000. He was promoted to driver engineer in 2002 and received the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003. He was the department’s Firefighter of the Year for 2009.
McIntyre is in charge of the department’s Special Services Committee. He is also an Honor Guard Member and EMT.
