Watermelon theft reported to police
A Winder man requested an officer come to his house after someone unlawfully removed a couple of items from his property.
When the officer arrived, the man walked outside and explained that he had two large watermelons in his garden the previous day. The man said when he checked on his garden that afternoon, the two watermelons were gone.
The man said he had noticed an increase in crime in the area. He explained that not only was there an issue with watermelon thefts, there were also several people speeding on the roadway in front of his home.
The man requested extra patrol due to the watermelon theft and speeders and also asked the officer to be on the lookout for the numerous deer that come onto his property at night and eat items from his garden.
Other recent incidents investigated by Winder Police include:
•bad check on North Broad. A business owner reported receiving a bad check in the amount of $128.30. The officer spoke with the woman who wrote the check and the woman said she would pay the business owner within the hour. The business owner did receive payment and declined to press charges.
•burglary on Saint Ives Crossing. A woman reported that her gun had been stolen. The gun was last seen on a shelf in her closet.
•burglary on Second Street. A laptop and tools valued at a total of $5,000 were reported stolen. There were no signs of forced entry.
•credit card fraud on Alex Drive. A woman reported that her debit card had been fraudulently used at several locations in the Athens and Washington, Ga. area.
•criminal trespass on Valleyview Drive. A front door and deadbolt were damaged at a vacant residence.
•damage to property on Georgia Avenue. A woman said a blue Ford Explorer struck a mailbox and did not stop.
•damage to property on Ryan Road. Two houses and a car were damaged when unidentified juveniles threw bottled water and cans of food at the property.
•damage to property on Second Street. A woman kicked another woman’s car causing a large dent in the fender.
•entering auto on East Broad Street. A GPS unit was stolen out of an unlocked vehicle.
•entering auto on Harpy Eagle Drive. A portable TV/ DVD player, a CD player and three speakers were reported stolen.
•entering auto on Horton Street. A woman’s purse was stolen after she left the windows rolled down enough for the thief to reach inside the vehicle and unlock the doors. The purse, valued at $120, contained the woman’s debit card, identification, checkbook and other miscellaneous paperwork.
•entering auto on Loganville Highway. A bowling ball and bag were stolen out of a vehicle after the thief shattered the rear passenger window.
•entering auto on Park Avenue. A GPS unit was stolen after the thief smashed a passenger side window with a large rock.
•entering auto on Second Street. A wallet containing cash, bank cards, a social security card, food stamp card, driver’s license, check book and other items was stolen out of an unlocked car.
•entering auto on West May Street. A purse and camera were stolen out of a vehicle while the vehicle owner was shopping. The woman could not recall if she locked the vehicle before leaving her purse unattended.
•entering auto on West May Street. A woman’s vehicle was broken into while she was at work. The woman returned to her car after work and discovered the driver’s window had been shattered. No items were reported missing.
•harassing phone calls on East Athens Street. The wife of a woman’s ex-fiancé left two threatening voice messages.
•harassing phone calls on West Midland. An ex-husband sent a text message to his exwife threatening to beat her new boyfriend if she brought the man home.
•no insurance on East Candler. An officer ran the tag on a 1999 Ford Explorer he observed while on patrol. The vehicle returned uninsured with suspended registration. When the officer pulled the vehicle over, the driver admitted that she had not paid her insurance recently. The driver was cited for not having insurance and her vehicle was towed.
•no insurance on North Williamson Street. An officer stopped an uninsured vehicle. After the driver was unable to produce proof of insurance, he was cited and the vehicle towed.
•no insurance on West Athens Street. An officer stopped a white Cadillac Seville after running the tag and discovering the vehicle was uninsured. When the driver was unable to produce proof of insurance, she was cited and her vehicle towed.
•stolen vehicle on Horton Street. A 1989 Lincoln Town Car was reported stolen. The vehicle was later recovered by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
•theft by taking on East May Street. A business manager discovered an employee had stolen a collections box from the counter of the business. The incident was recorded on in-store surveillance.
•theft by taking on West Candler Street. Two vehicle magnets were reported stolen. The magnets were political signs printed with “Vote for Frank Clark Barrow County Commissioner.”
•theft of lost or mislaid property on North Broad Street. A man left his cell phone on a table at a restaurant. By the time he walked back inside to retrieve the phone, it had been stolen.
•verbal dispute on Searchlight Drive. Two women exchanged words during a dispute over clothing.
•welfare check on Nancy Street. An officer was dispatched to check on an elderly female who had contacted a friend requesting help. The officer forced entry to the home after a motionless elderly female was seen inside the residence. Once inside the home, the officer was able to rouse the female who had apparently taken more than her prescribed dose of medication. She was assessed by emergency services personnel at the scene.
