Victim in fatal accident identified

One woman has been confirmed dead as a result of a fatal wreck this afternoon on Highway 8 in front of the Walmart shopping center. Five other people were injured.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said a passenger vehicle and a pickup truck collided in the intersection at the entrance of the shopping center. The driver of the car, 40-year-old Karen Shockley of Winder, was killed and her 15-year-old passenger injured.

The initial investigation indicates the driver of the pickup truck, Joseph Crane, age 29 of Cornelia, ran the red light. Crane’s wife and two children, ages 18 months and six years old, were also injured.

Charges are pending, Wright said.

The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol post in Athens and the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).

No one on this earth is judge or jury. Until the full investagation is complete, NO ONE should make any comment on charges of any kind. Anytime we get into a vehicle, we could be in the same shoes of any of the persons involved. As people we are so quick to judge and this is not something we should do.

Mr or Mrs Heard Enough............ Yes I have been in a car accident. I had a fiance that was killed in a car wreck by a guy that was in a hurry and yes he ran a redlight. So I know how the family of the woman killed feals. It is mind boggling that the police make a statement that charges are pending. We all know that there will be charges. So please tell me how I am pathetic, misguided and stupid as you put it. Walk a mile in the shoes of the family of the woman that was killed. She was just on the way to Wal-Mart to get who knows what and she was killed by someone who didn't want to take the 3 mins (this is the average time for a redlight) to stop and follow the LAW.

i dont know u but i to have lost someone in a car acct. in a red light also but at the same time no one knows but the ones there so we are not to say any thing to any one .we was not there and dont know who was in a hurry. how do we know he may have had a sick kid trying to find a hospital. he is a young person with small ones on board and who knows what had his mine on them the road his other half. the road is very unsalf there u know ur self. u cant say u never ran a yellow light going to red because u didnt see it turning or someone talking to u or small kids in the car calling u or getting sick. there is many reasons. the only ones who will know is god above and the people in it. u wish for small ones to lose the father and the other to lose one to what is that fixing anything. fix the traff problem there first and teach people not take one for one when its not ment to happen,we do make mistakes. u do every day god made no one with out them i do my paster does u do get real.

pam no matter what the excuse would be there is absolutely no reason for anyone to run a red light, NO MATTER THE REASON, also going through a yellow light is not illegal at all, now anyone who makes the decision to run a red light knowing full well that it could come to this does deserve to loose their life as they know it, especially when theyre also risking the lives of children, the traffic problem isnt that its "right there" its the fact that so many people have no business driving in the first place mostly due to lack of common sense, MAINLY YOUNG PEOPLE as you called them, youre the one that needs to get real if for nothing else the simple fact that you have a dreamland view of life

Are both of you trying to tell everyone that you have never broken a traffic law? I think not! If you think that someone needs to be in jail for life for this tragic incident, then what would you do to a shoplifter who foght with a security guard, where the guard had a heart attack and died. I hope that you are never in a car wreck that is your fault and have someone who is "better than you" ready to hang you at a public lynching. Mr and Mrs Heard. I have been the where my best friend was kiled while in the service of this country. And the driver that ran the red got off scott free . Now it's time to tighten the belt on red light runners. You want to preach to someone about salvation and what they should have done go talk to Crane about his stupid act of running the red light. Like I first stated he needs to spend the rest of him natural life behind bars. From what I hear he made his charge to start with,without a judge and a jury of his peers. And further more you need to have your facts before you start trying to start making comments as you have.

I have friends in Law Enforcement that say you have the wrong idea about the matter. And that you have way to quick to have yourself judge and jury in the matter. There were charges filed that day.

We didnt start driving yesterday but it seems that we have many more distractions today than yesterday. I see it every day...people texting, women putting on makeup, etc. Everyone is guilty of doing something they should not while driving but it takes something like this to remind us of the consequences. The roads are dangerous enough with drunks so stop adding to the problem. Its our family and friends out there that are getting killed.

For those of you who know nothing about this should keeps their comments to themselves. That woman who died is my sister in-law and she was a great woman and a wonderful mother. She has left 3 kids in this world alone for their father is not here either. She will never see her kids graduate High School, get married, never have any grandchildren to love and spoil, and she will be missed forever. That man should be punished for what he has done but he will also have to live with what he has done for the rest of his life and I hope it haunts him forever like her death will haunt our family forever. No one deserves to die. The 15 yr old that was in the car was her daughter who will have to live with the fact that she watched her mom die and could do nothing. So may that man live in hell forever and suffer for all eternity.

Umm, very sorry for the loss to all who were affected.....but when Nikki stated,` may that man live in hell forever and suffer for all etenity' I am not quite certain where you would gain the notion that she is a loving person. While Hell is in fact a place of great torment, God Himself, doesn't desire or wish for anyone to go there. Therefore, I am not exactly sold on the loving part of this person named Nikki....Should the man suffer consequences? He will! Most likely, he already is....Will he ever be able to pay a feasible restitution or re-pay the loss of life? No! But there is nothing in this story that leads me to believe he got into his truck that day with the intention,`I think I will go kill me some rednecks from Barrow County in my pick-up truck.' I understand the pain of loss. No, it isn't fair. But lets not create a domino effect of hate just because we have unsettled emotions.

What happened on this day was an accident, as everyone knows. The driver did wrong, is it my job to judge, absolutely not. I think the guy already suffers enough grief about it. If it were my family that died the first thing I would work on is forgiving the family, because it will always haunt me. God himself tells us to forgive, he states "let him who is without sin cast the first stone." I am the first to say I sin. I get distracted as does every other driver if you say not, you are lying.

I have had family die in car wrecks and the first thing I have learned to do is forgive.

Not to mention, I work as a firefighter and see this stuff all the time, people are resentful, and people will be judged but I do not do that for them, it is for God to judge.

Finally, I pray and will continue to pray for the family who lost their loved one, it is hard and you can make it, and for the family that has to live with this regret for now on. Both deserve our prayers at this time.

We have not heard any more reports from the investigation by the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team. We need to get all the facts once the investigation is completely finished. We all know that this is an accident, it was not murder. I am sure the driver of the truck wasn't driving down the road thinking that "Hey! Let me crash into this car and kill this lady"

He had his family with him. A 6 year old and a 18 month. A number of things could have happened. They could have been fighting in the back and he got distracted. If you say you have never been distracted while driving you are an absolute liar!

I believe that the driver of the truck was NOT drinking or under the influence of any drugs.

With the driver being from Cornelia, he may have not been familiar with the road (which is possible and could be true).

I am sure Mr. Crane will have to deal with this and that should be punishment enough. I am sorry to hear the loss of Mrs. Shockley. Everyone needs to pray for each family.

What is wrong with you people? Arguing over grammar, punctuation, who's right, who's wrong?! Good grief what a bunch of immature, petty little people. I don't know any of the people who were involved in this wreck but I do know that area and that light and its very dangerous through there. I've seen many people run the red light there and many pull out in front of others at that road. I don't know why its that way but it is. As for blame, no one knows the facts until the investigation is over but who ever is to blame will have to pay legally but even more so emotionally. I doubt who ever is at fault purposely did what they did knowing the damage it would cause. But in saying that we are all responsible for our actions whether intended or not. All of these people involved lives are changed forever and the bickering, name calling and nastiness from those 'discussing' this helps no one. Perhaps thinking how the person's and their families feel at this time and what its cost both of the families could make some of you who are arguing over this use a little more common sense and compassion when posting.

You know whats sad is you have all these opinions but none of you understand its completely out of your hands. Understand this you can judge an spread the thoughts of your own all you want but in the end it solves absolutely nothing!!!

Everyone in this world has had something bad happen to them bad or terrible never the less none of you need to make statements as to what should happen to anyone. If this was you what would you do an how would you feel living with the thoughts and feeling of what you had seen or for that matter been made to see. I know this is a touching subject for the family of the victim and friends an I want to say I'm sorry for your loss, but if you think that making another my suffer for the rest of his life will bring you peace your wrong. Yall talk about how their are children involved, who she will not get to see them get married etc, but are y'all thinking about his children? No! Things happen for a reason, it's all part of God's plan. I think what we all need to think about is she is in a better place than any of us right now. Somewhere people don't judge and forgive. In heaven. Where someday I hope to be too. If y'all think that his not going to suffer from this, y'all are wrong. His paying for it already. So maybe one day if y'all let God into your heart and life you will know he is the only judge and would forgive you too.... For anything!! I want to say that we need to pray for both families. You do not know what each family is going through. My grandfather was shot and killed. The men were never caught!!! I know what the family that lost the loved one is going through. Mr. Crane is a good man and one that would give the shirt off his back. YOU have no right to judge someone you do not know. We ALL make mistakes and it is not up to us to judge someone or slander them on the internet when we do not know the exact situation or circumstances. I feel that enough is enough!! You better watch what you say about someone else because it could be you in HIS shoes! It is awful for both families and I pray greatly for them. I knew Karen very well and also her children, I love them and I feel so sad for the children whom I love and used to call my grandchildren, we spent lots of time together when I lived in Winder, now I am in Costa Rica and got the news a couple of days ago.
I ask that you people respect the fact that the children may read all these comments and some of them are not going to help. Accidents happen and errors we commit but we are commanded to forgive and to not judge. Karen was a noble person, sweet I am sure she would have forgiven the error this man made and I am sure he did not do it on purpose. This is just so bad for all of us who know this family. And so sad to know that this young man has to face such a mistake. We need to pray for all of them involved in this ugly accident.

I can understand if he was drinking or high on something, but he was neither. You all said he should go to jail, but I say he will suffer enough just knowing what happened. There is no such thing as a traffic “accident”. There are traffic collisions. An "accident" is a specific, unidentifiable, unexpected, unusual and unintended external action which occurs in a particular time and place, with no apparent and deliberate cause but with marked effects. This traffic collision was clearly preventable and most definately had cause. Had the offender been paying attention and not ran the red light, this collision would not have occurred. Period. End of story. Place the blame SQUARELY where it belongs.

I repeat that knew Karen well, she was a good lady always working, I love her kids and I do not know the young man involved, however I hope in God he will find peace because it was a horror not an error what he went through, and such a small mistake he will have to live with... I have made so many mistakes in my life... run a red light and a stop sign... God knows I too could have kill somebody and I am so thankfull that I did not. My heart goes sad for this young man, I know he did not mean such an accident... who could mean that?
How can you be so rude and cruel, so un-human, so ugly, so disrespectful and unforgiven, who died and made you a Judge?

Blah, Blah, Blah. No one is saying Karen wasn't a good person. No one is saying that that Crane, the offender, isn't a good person. My point is that this was not an "accident". It was a preventable death. Preventable, by simply paying attention, and obeying the various traffic laws put in place to prevent this very type of tragedy. Sorry, "Tatty", but this was in no way a "small mistake he will have to live with". This was a HUGE mistake. A preventable error that caused Karen, the good wife and mother, her life. And you are right; he will have to live with that for the rest of his.

Who knows what happened to Mr. Crane for him to cause this tragedy. Obviously, no one here.

Vengence is mine sayeth the Lord....Not ours! Shame on some of you, I don't think these individuals woke up and thought that their worst nightmare was going to happen that day. Lord help us if some of you are on a jury. A womans life is gone and a man will forever live with what he had done. To forgive someone is sometimes hard because its hard to forget. When you morn someone you go through many stages and especially if it was sudden. Everyone needs to pray for the woman's family and not feed into this feeding frenzy. The truth always comes out. Don't be a lench mob, throwing stones or burning stakes!
