Because of Barrow County’s worsening financial condition, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday placed an immediate freeze on all non-essential spending.
The board’s unanimous vote was at a meeting that was called to help the county’s finance staff complete a balanced spending plan for fiscal year 2011, which begins Oct. 1.
CFO Rose Kisaalita earlier this month requested both an immediate spending freeze and a special budget meeting of the full commission.
The spending freeze is to address a projected $1.5 million deficit for the current fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.
If year-end spending is curtailed, the shortfall for FY2010 might be less, reducing the impact on the county’s diminishing reserves, according to Kisaalita.
During Wednesday's meeting, the board discussed but took no action on the FY 2011 budget, though progress was made.
Another called meeting has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday in the board of commissioners meeting room.

EVER spending money on things that aren't essential?? They are supposed to be TRUSTEES
of our tax dollars. Instead they buy all sorts of things business people don't even consider--nice big chairs instead of every day office chairs ($59); excessive waste of paper and ink; etc. etc. How many extra phone lines does the county pay for every month? It goes on. Non-essential means those things everybody WANTS and has, but don't have to have to actually do their job.
