Cousin steals truck, goes on $500 crack binge
A Winder man became the victim of two thefts after a visit from his recently jailed cousin.
The victim said his cousin, Joe Nathaniel Oliver, 47, of 53 Dove Street in Kingstree, S.C., came for a visit after being released from jail in South Carolina.
While the victim was out of town, Oliver took a 2002 Ford F-150 truck and some money that the victim had at his house. The thefts were witnessed by another visiting cousin.
When the victim returned home, the other visiting cousin said he had spoken with Oliver and told him to return the truck and the money, but Oliver had failed to do so.
The victim advised that Oliver was known to use crack cocaine and had stolen vehicles in the past in order to trade them for drugs.
Two days later, the victim was driving near Glenwood when he spotted his stolen truck. The victim followed the truck and saw four black males exit the vehicle after parking it on Oak Street.
An officer made contact with two of the individuals who had been in the truck. One of the passengers said a friend he knew only as “J.B.” had given him a ride.
The victim did not have a spare key to the vehicle with him and made arrangements to have his daughter meet him with a key. After leaving to meet his daughter, the man called dispatch and said he had just seen Oliver walking on West May Street.
When confronted by an officer, Oliver admitted taking the truck and his cousin’s money. Oliver said he gave the truck keys to a black male subject a few days earlier and had not seen the vehicle since.
Oliver then said he had smoked $500 worth of crack over the weekend and was having chest pains.
After being checked by paramedics, Oliver was placed under arrest for theft by taking and theft by taking motor vehicle.
The truck was returned to the victim.
