A candidate for the Barrow County Board of Education has been facing four civil lawsuits in the county.

Beverly Kelley is a candidate for the BOE District 4 seat that is being vacated by Larry Ballard.

Kelley told the Barrow Journal Thursday that she was in a car accident several years ago that was not her fault and that she has dealt with chronic pain since that time. She also said she has been dealing with the death of her father.

“I am not a deadbeat,” Kelley said. “I have had a lot on my plate. The government bailed out some of these companies and they would not work with me. We have always prided ourselves on paying our bills.”

Kelley’s husband, Clay Kelley, said the credit card issues were something they had to do “because of business” during the downturn of the economy.

“Attorneys bought the debt for pennies on the dollar,” Mr. Kelley said. “She (my wife) has nothing to hide. This happens to a lot of people.”

The Kelleys stressed they have donated many hours to the community and help needy children during Christmas.

The Kelleys said the suits are being addressed and some have already been settled.

The suits are:

•GE Moneybank vs. Beverly Kelley for the amount of $4,313.05, case # 10CV-1811-X, filed 6-30-10;

•Target National Bank vs. Beverly Kelley for the amount of $1,005.49, case # CV-000596-X, filed 2-17-2010;

•Citibank vs. Beverly Kelley for the amount of $2,412.66, case # 10CV-000837-X, filed 3-22-2010;

•Capital One Bank vs. Beverly Kelley for the amount of $3,342.67, case # 10CV-001095-X, filed 4-12-2010.

This happens to alot of people including me once in my life ..everyone goes through trying times and i can tell you I have talked to beverly and her passion for the school system out weighs a breif financial issue

also another thing mr bridges , why wont you let her defend herself saying in so many words "well you put yourself out there when you ran" sir you have a duty to write facts and if they are disputed you have the duty to let the person defend theirself.To deny this passionate woman the right to defend herself is down right rude.We will not tolerate that ..LET HER SPEAK AND STOP TELLING HER "OH WELL"

This "passionate woman" spoke. Or didn't you read that? The writer quoted her. So what's your beef?

It's scary that people support someone who couldn't manage her finances, yet they want her to manage the school system. Candidates want to cut the school system budget, yet they're not cutting their own spending.

Seems like a disconnnect somewhere.

It takes a lot of effort on the part of a collection agency to get the point where a civil suit is filed. Those above amounts seem to be fairly small. If the defendant had sent the credit cards something regularly ever month ($20, $30), a suit wouldn't have been filed.

The defendant's husband alluded to "business decisions", but it appears to me that they are all regular consumer credit companies. One of them is Target, for crying out loud. In my opinion a deadbeat consumer with multiple pending lawsuits has no business in politics.

If money is that tight, instead of devoting time to political aspirations, perhaps a part time job (in addition the full time job I'm assuming the defendant has) is in order to get some of these lawsuits off the defendant's back. I’m sure Target is hiring cashiers…

Hey jerk we were paying these every month and my husband was the one with the 2 and 1/2 jobs. These got to this point because we never let them go late. We immediately when he lost 1 and 1/2 contracts tried to work with the companies and some did and some refused. So before they even went past due one month we turned to a debt consolidation company so these bills could keep being paid. That escalated the process and had I been a dead beat and ignored the bills and let the acrue late fees and Interest payments and over the limit fees we would have owed a lot more. So I did the reasonable smart thing right after we found out his contracts were ending and that is why these even hit this soon. If you look none are that old. They were 30 days and less in some cases when they found out we were going to have to go to a company to help us consolidate and come up with a manageable payment. I didn't and don't intend to file bankruptcy my house note has never ever gotten behind. My utilities have never gotten cut off and my kids have never gone without food or medical benefits. The main thing has to remain the main thing. I have nothing to hide. I didn't make bad business decisions I am a recruiter and find people jobs. Well a little common sense would show even this dumbass that wants to throw rocks that when the economy took a quick drastic turn the first thing that happened is no need for more employees have you looked at the unemployment rate or have you been under a rock. I guess you would rather have those that are shady and have never had anything or done anything in office. I have been in office for 8 years prior to this and we never had to raise your taxes or cut programs like they are now. I always made them cut the fat. I have done that and took an immediate active role BEFORE my bills ever went past due. I guess you would have rather me ignored them and acted like I didn't owe them and didn't mail them anything. My Father raised me a hell of a lot better than that. Just because you have never had to work at a job where it's feast or famine doesn't mean many don't. My husband is also a recruiter and he must be a good one or he surely would have lost his main contract which he did not. Otherwise we would have lost everything. Maybe you would have been happy with that. Do you realize you can buy school supplies and medications at target. You know I do have a lot of copays for my meds roughly on average $200 a month. I will let you pay that if you would like to. Plus everytime I get a needle stuck down my spine I have to pay another $75. Maybe you would gladly take my place. God has plans for you I am sure of that. Don't mess with God's Children He doesn't take it too lightly. Thanks Kevin and hey the backlash is helping me people who know me and what I have done for over 12 years for this community are pissed. Keep it up and lets see how mad they will get.

As a parent I am apppalled that a school board candidate would begin a written response with such inappropriate words. If you speak the way you write and use similar words when you speak then you ARE NOT a person to be in charge of our children's education. I do not use such language nor do I call people some of the names you have used. I am glad I did not vote for you and hope that other voters will think twice about your character before they vote for you.

Ms. Kelley, I don't know you personally, but just happened upon this article while doing some research before voting. Your financial troubles would not be enough to sway me from voting for you, but you can be sure that your incredibly inappropriate response have. How can you expect teachers (for whom you are making life-affecting decisions) to trust and respect you and the BOE office when you are unable to control yourself in such a public forum? Unbelievable. I will go cast my ballot for whomever is running against you, as folks with as much unprofessionalism and volatility as you should not be a position to make decisions that directly affect my life and career.

I read the article and can certainly understand the possibility of past financial constraints. Question 1: What are you doing to resolve this matter as you didn't question the justification of the debt? Question 2: I live in Barrow County but send my kids to Jefferson to go to a good school system. What would YOU do to change my mind about the schools in Barrow County? Question 3: I realize you may feel attacked in the replies, but,if elected, will it be your protocol to insult and name call or will you be a humble public servant? I realize there are not many who have served to use as role models...

Well Beverly, I guess your financial difficulties and your inflammatory remarks certainly alienated the voters in your district. Thankfully they were able to see that you obviously didn't have the temperament to be successful in the glaring spotlight of political public service. From my point of view, most people don't know you, outside of what has been reported in the newspaper and the exchange that has taken place here. A good first impression is only available one time. I don't know where you got your information, but it's wrong. Mrs. Kelley was emailed Monday prior to the article's publication on Wednesday and we never received a reply. Only after publication did she respond and we've made every effort here to allow her to have her say in the matter.

...that Kathy Cox had no business being an elected official, especially in light of the bankruptcy? I think that we all understand (although that some are obviously in denial) that someone who cannot control their own personal finances has no business being in a position to influence the complex finances of a school system.

And Kevin, I can understand the frustration of not being able to use this newspaper as a venue to "tell their own side", however, the last time I checked it is a reports job to report information they "dig up" on candidates. Be that as it may, this newspaper or the reporters who wrote the article, did not file those lawsuits against that candidate or cause her do default on her consumer obligations and responsibilities. The public has a right to know that a potential candidate apparently cannot manage her personal finances.

I'm sure this newspaper will gladly sell the candidate advertising space to let her explain her side of the story to potential voters. She can always do mass mailings, advertise and appear on WIMO or any other media outlet.

Of course, she could always use the money she has spent on her campaign to PAY HER BILLS.

Beverly Kelley shows herself to be unqualified for office twice. First by being incapable of managing her personal finances, and second by her intemperate and disgraceful responses here.

Barrow County Schools deserve better. We've seen enough of Kelley.

We would not allow students to respond in such a manner and to think you want to sereve on the school board, its people like you this county does NOT need. I WAS an unbiased reader until I got to the comment section. I was somewhat sympathetic to Kelley's situation. Many of us have been affected by tough times, and I don't think it's shameful if you are trying to work your way out of debt.

That said, I am horrified at the response from Kelley. Please tell me that someone else is posting under her name and that she would not conduct herself like that in a public forum?

I happen to know Mrs. Kelley and her family. I also know that most of the people on this site don't have a clue who Mrs. Kelley is or they wouldn't be slamming her. I know that she has not said anything but a lot of the things she has done is for the Kids in this community who have noone speaking for them. I also know Mrs. Kelley took in a 15 year old under temporary guardianship when the child was in a bad situation with drugs and stuff and she doesn't talk the talk she walks the walk. As for the comment. I know more than likely one of Mrs. Kelley's Kids probably wrote that comment. You must think what it does when they see their mom attacked when she has endured so much. I know she only answers to one person and that is first and foremost God. Then her family. I know Mrs. Kelley also stayed with her father the last six months of her life. She had her priorities straight. I also know that most of the people heaping insults have no clue what she is really about. If she had not spent tons of money on the school system and helping those in need including myself many times she would have never had issues with money. I guess she should have kept her money and been selfish like most of the people blogging on her. Shame on you. Mrs. Kelley we are behind you and your care and leadership in this communtity speaks volumns. This is mainly the people that are intimidated by someone who is a go getter.

What they did was uncalled for, and an excellent example of dirty politics and mud slinging.

By the same token, I think Mrs. Kelly owes the citizens of Barrow County an apology for her outrageous response to the article.

I do not want someone with such a volatile personality on the BOE.

In this economy, there is no shame in having financial difficulties.

Even the most stable of businesses and people are struggling.

Mrs. Kelly, had you rationally explained the situation then the article would have worked in your favor.

Turning a negative into a positive is always the best course of action.

Citizens of Barrow yes she put herself out there when she decided to run, but remember this next time it would be your picture, your name, your problems splashed on the front page of the paper.
